Channel 7 The News Station ?? Fails To Cover Bush's UN Speech

Channel 7 which passes itself off as "The News Station" was the ONLY Boston television station which failed to broadcast live George Bush's address to the United Nations this morning.

Guess, it didn't bleed; so it didn't lead. Not tabloid enough for Ansin tabloid tatler.

Instead, Channel 7 stayed with "Reeeeeeeeeeeeegis and What's her name - Kelly",
Ugh.

Yup, you will never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the average television general manager.

Let's see..........

....more mush from the wimp.....OR.....that MAJOR POA Kelly and her HAWT legs?....... SeeYa

Use caution:

"News Police" may have been registered as a trademark by an extremist organization (one of the major political parties).

It's not true that "parklane" is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the
"Kerry in 2008" campaign. Now as to ownership by other wannabe
candidates.........

No I was Leon Trostsky's Campaign Manager. "Not a bad guy!" A little shot though.

In 7's defense, being an NBC affiliate, they, unlike 4 and 5, have a cable outlet (MSNBC) that makes it less necessary for them to interrupt, or at least gives them the flexibility to do so or not. CBS and ABC don't have that choice. The best thing they could have done is run a crawl saying: "TUNE TO MSNBC NOW: BUSH ADDRESSES U.N., MORE LATER ON 7 NEWS" Hence, tying in the branding, at least partially fulfilling their obligation to the viewer, and promoting their later coverage.

Do you have any idea how many cretins call newsrooms complaining about missing soap operas, "The View," "Dr. Phil," "Family Feud" or some equally inane crap because it was interrupted for breaking news? They are pains in the ass who would rather see whether Girl X is really the one "who be frontin' and messin' 'round wit' my baby's daddy" or whether Girl Y is the bigger hoochie mama than hear about major world policy decisions, BUT, they too are part of the audience... and what TV station, especially one with options like 7, hasn't pandered to its audience before?

P.S.: Trying to imagine the "frontin'" line spoken with my British accent... it's a whole lot funnier!

Possible, but they interrupted plenty during Katrina. Plenty of blood and guts there to feed that tabloid monster.

No real excuse but as usual WHDH Ch. 7 always appeals to the lowest common demoninator.

Well, as far as you're concerned, they're clearly damned if they do and damned if they don't. Katrina was quite a "messy" story... but Jim Lehrer covered it extensively, too. Does that make him or any other outlet a tabloid merchant? No... well not unless you count Geraldo "What nudge?" Rivera. Why not? BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN THE MOST IMPORTANT DOMESTIC STORY ON OUR SCREENS SINCE 9/11! Besides, if they'd really wanted to "feed the monster," they would've sent their lead anchor, whose hometown is Baton Rouge. (Purely in terms of the amount of coverage; I like Randy Price very much)

You criticize 7 for covering something when they do, and then do so again when they don't; whether you love or hate them, that makes no sense. You should just admit that you would prefer they didn't exist as a news organization (an entirely legitimate point) and then leave the debate to those who can make cogent points in favor of both sides.

Oh yeah, parklane, I love flicking onto 4, 5, 6 (NECN), 7 and seeing the same friggin thing. Props to 7 for not showing it.

Re: Let's see..........

Did NBC carry the President's speech at the UN??

If the network didn't carry the speech, it may have been a little more difficult for WHDH-7 to carry it, but not impossible. They could have simulcast MSNBC's coverage.

Re: Let's see..........

> They could have simulcast MSNBC's coverage.

Nope. They need permission from NBC corporate to do so.
MSNBC isn't a NBC Network feed, it is a seperately run cable television network.
If NBC put MSNBC on one of the newschannel feeds, then they would be able to.

FWIW, I didn't see anyone else carry it locally here.

Keep your political comments off of this board, thanks.

You reveal yourself as the typical Channel 7 viewer.
"Oh, Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeege is my skirt tight enough......"
Opiate for the masses.

You and John Dennis. Same windbag commentary.

4 now got Mary Hart's legs up in air, right against Kelly's every morning at 9.
They repeat yesterday's ET and Insider with old news(3 days old on
Mondays). Don't you love how the suits out of Miami and New York
run our local stations?

Unfortunately, the only legs I saw yesterday morning at 9 on Ch. 4 and Ch.5 were George Bush's. Mary Hart was nowhere to be seen. But Kelly Ripa.......

Re: Let's see..........

Nationally, the "Today" show would have still been running until 10 AM. Did NBC carry coverage of the President's speech on the "Today" show?

Keep in mind that ch. 7 carries Regis & Kelly live at 9 AM and shows the third hour of "Today" at 10 AM. So perhaps if there was network coverage on the "Today" show, it was shown on ch. 7 at 10 AM??

Perhaps it would've been wiser for ch. 7 to cover the president's speech and show Regis & Kelly at 10 AM instead?

Re: Let's see..........

I think NBC does give affiliates a little flexibility in broadcasting the third hour of "Today".

While the O&O's and most stations run it from 9 to 10 A.M., I believe NBC stations in the Eastern time zone have the option of running the third hour from 10 to 11 A.M., and likely picking-up the same feed (whether all tape or part-live) that Central time zone affiliates pick-up at 9 A.M. CT.

No, it was an optional special report.

To put it technically, NBC's 10am Today Show (Or Today Show III) is broadcast "live" from 9-10am. on the East Coast Feed (Digital Service 09), however NBC re-airs TS on the Central Coast Feed (Digital Service 10). The president's speech was offered on "NBC optional", or Digital Service 15.
The affiliates have to tune this in manually and take it to air.
