Chaos on Boston Radio a Gift to WGBH and WBUR Radio

While the commercial radio station are in complete turmoil for the next few years the stability of our outstanding PBS stations, WGBH-FM 89.7 and WBUR-FM 90.9, will allow them to prosper to an even greater degree. The professional news staff of both stations are growing. Phil Redo and Joe Mathieu are just two examples of commercial radio personnel who have migrated to PBS. Tom Ashbrook on WBUR's outstanding "On Point" and Jim Braude and Margery Egan on WGBH-FM 89.7 "Boston Public Radio" have been handed a mega gift with the upcoming instability of commercial radio in Boston. If whoever takes over the powerhouse signal of WBZ Radio AM 1030 and dismantles its 'go-to' news format for something cut rate or syndicated the PBS affiliates here in the Boston market will grow even more with their demonstrated stability and they will become the 'go-to' stations for credible news programming. Again, Public Broadcasting in the Boston market has been handed a mega gift by the turmoil in Boston's commercial radio.

You probably mean "public radio" or "public broadcasting".I think PBS refers to a public TV organization.Public radio would mean local public radio outlets, National Public Radio, American Public Media, Public Radio International etc

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Radio_International
From wikipedia entry on PBS:
"Unlike the five major commercial broadcast television networks in the United States, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and The CW – which compensate their affiliate stations to carry their programs – PBS is not a network but a program distributor that provides television content and related services to its member stations. "

To be sure but maybe you missed the point that " public radio" will benefit greatly from the chaos in Boston commercial radio. Also, Sirius Satellite Radio will benefit.

Chaos? Or a rejuvenation?

I am guessing there will be more interesting programming on WRKO after this sale/swap than before.

WRKO has offerred very little to talkradio listeners in recent years.

I am guessing WRKO will improve.

And WBZ-AM might add an FM signal...making them more competitive with younger people.

Otherwise, I don't think the average listener will notice a difference.

Could WRKO get any worse. How far the once great station that housed Gene Burns, Jerry Williams and David Brudnoy just to name a few has fallen. The station has become a Kuhner which sound like some incurable disease. Let's start a radiothon to wipe out Kuhner in our lifetime....

Kuhner will at least tomorrow morning be doing the late Bill Kelly's brokered show..don't know if he will continue after that.Maybe RKO falls into iHR hands in a month or two..an LMA can start up. Yes I did get your point about local public radio news-talkers benefitting.

What? You mean that dynamic duo, the morning brain trust, now apparently with a new uber-liberal sidekick named "snowflake" who apparently gets more air time than VB, isn't the hottest thing to hit Boston since Irish Whiskey?

Could WRKO get any worse.

Yes. It could be the Boston.COM morning show 24-7, interspersed with Dave Ramsey IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'M DEBT FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE screams.

I gather tomorrow's show is supposed to be a "tribute". I do not think much, of any, of Kelly's show was "live". The only "calls" he ever seemed to take, whenever I listened, were from his employees with "market updates", and Krazy K000nah once in a while would call in with poignant political analysis.

You should have heard my conversation about "Jim Braude" and his paycheck I had with my 'GBH donation door knocker" I had today in Quincy!
OUR moderator would most certainly NOT "deem it approximate!"
😜

The problem with wgbh and wbur is they pretty much are mostly syndicated. If one of them launched a full local news format then that may be interesting.

I did try to listen to wgbh for the first time a couple months ago to hear what Joe Mathieu was up to - all I heard in several attempts was one 15 second break him doing a Eagan and Braude promo and then back to NPR. This was right in prime morning drive time - not even a traffic mention.

I can get national news anywhere so I haven't been back.

Will the average listener notice that WBZ will drop the daily 14 hours news block with no more traffic and weather on the threes, sports every hour or local, national or worldwide correspondents for whatever crap that Clear Channel/ I heart puts on the station.
Is this the average listener that much of a moron?

Egan and Braude are not and never were in " prime morning drive time".

Would be more concerned if a " Kuhner door knocker" came to the door. Would immediately call 911.

Are there really people knocking on doors for GBH? I never encountered one!

Who said they are doing that?

The problem with wgbh and wbur is they pretty much are mostly syndicated.

You say that likes it's a bad thing! ;-) (I.e....a "problem".)

NPR's ME and ATC are great programs that work as a national feed...and a ratings winner. And, properly exectuted includes room for local features and local news....so you get the whole landscape.

You've made the point before you don't listen to NPR stations, so I am assuming you don't understand how Morning Edition and All Things Considered works (Especially on WBUR).

In the morning, the national program is a framework, with local inserts. WBUR does this very well!

I can get national news anywhere so I haven't been back.

Not national news presented comprehensively and with depth and analysis.

It's not just national news....it includes local news as well. And, it's not just "national news"...it's news, analysis, depth, and commercial free.

I don't know where you can get news and analysis like you can get from NPR. Please let me know.

Oh, yes they were! At WTKK 96.9, once Imus finally got booted from their airwaves. In fact, theirs was the very last talk show broadcast on WTKK 96.9 in January 2013, minutes before before it flipped to stunting and what eventually became its hot new format that everyone seems to fawn over because it skews younger and bills better.

They were sharp, with much more self-deprecating humor, and bantered very well. I now find them a bit stodgy on 'GBH.

Donor Development Strategies (DDS) works with NPR & PBS stations across the nation to make
an impact and support education, quality programming, and non-corporate media.

Here in the Boston, DDS is working on behalf of Boston's PBS/NPR (WGBH) in the, first of its kind,
door-to-door campaign for public media. We're hiring full and part-time staff members to get
out into the community, sign up members and fund-raise for WGBH!

Of course you find them stodgy!
You make missing the point an art form.
11 to 2 is not primetime, or morning drive!
Morning drive shows start at 5:00AM, and run until 9:00AM , or sometimes 10:00

WGBH's Morning Edition is from 5-10am while WBUR's is 5-9am. WGBH has Boston Public Radio in which Jim and Margery is middays from 11am-2pm.

I think this is a great idea. Radio listeners in lots of other big cities, including San Francisco, Washington DC, and New York, have discovered the virtues of talk radio that doesn't yell at you, that doesn't create enemies, that doesn't divide us, but unites us. I think regular listeners of WBZ and WRKO will find WGBH and WBUR a breath of fresh air. My only hope is that those new listeners will also join with other Bostonians to become members of those stations.
