Charles Osgood leaves 'CBS Sunday Morning'; Jane Pauley to take over

‘Sunday Morning’ Host Charles Osgood to Retire

Charles Osgood will retire as anchor of CBS’ “Sunday Morning,” he announced on Sunday.

“I am pushing 84,” he said in a statement.

His last “Sunday Morning” broadcast will air on Sept. 25, marking the end of his 22 years on the show.

The host will continue to anchor “The Osgood File,” which are daily news commentaries broadcast on the CBS Radio Network and stations around the country.

He will also make occasional appearances on “Sunday Morning.”

Osgood shared this on today’s broadcast:

“Some of you may have heard rumors lately that I won’t be hosting these ‘Sunday Morning’ broadcasts very much longer. Well, I’m here to tell you that the rumors are true. For years now people — even friends and family — have been asking me why I keep doing this considering my age. I am pushing 84. It’s just that it’s been such a joy doing it! Who wouldn’t want to be the one who gets to introduce these terrific storytellers and the producers and writers and others who put this wonderful show together. I want to thank all of them and all of you in our still-growing audience for your support and encouragement. It’s been a great run, but after nearly 50 years at CBS, including the last 22 years here on ‘Sunday Morning,’ the time has come. The date is set for me to do my farewell ‘Sunday Morning.’ It’s September the 25th, after which you can still see me on the radio. ‘The Osgood File’ continues.”

Funny how the newspapers are turning this into a new story, when we know this has been in the works a while.

I understand that this has been a part-time job for Osgood lately. He just comes in, reads intros, and that's about it. So it's not a big deal.

There was a time when CBS had a mandatory retirement age of 65. That's how they replaced Walter Cronkite with Dan Rather. Quite a lot of people left the company at that age, until the mandatory retirement age was abolished at some point in the late 80s. I think former CEO Larry Tisch got rid of it as he approached that birthday.

Be careful Charles!!! Andy Rooney retires, dies weeks later. Morley Schafer retires, dies soon after. CBS does not like anyone leaving and collecting their retirement!!!

Wow I remember one aircheck where Charles Osgood was the first Talent on WCBS-AM right when it flipped all News in 1967. And the biggest story at the time was WCBS AM transmitter was hit by an airplane.

I watched the CBS Sunday Morning program today and enjoyed Charlie's send-off. He's quite a talent and quite a gentleman. I'll miss him but I'm hoping that Jane Pauley will do a good job.

I think Jane Pauley is a very good replacement for the show. She's measured and plainspoken and familiar to most as a regular fill-in on Sunday Morning over the last few years.

I disagree. She doesn't strike me as a good choice to succeed Osgood, but someone was needed. I think Steve Hartman would've been a better choice. He relates far better to people IMO and could've kept 'On the Road' going, handling both jobs just as Charles Kuralt did.
