Mobile Charles "Tim" Camp, owner of WZEW/WNSP passes away

Very sad news from WZEW/WNSP as longtime owner Tim Camp passed away over the weekend. The following was posted on the WZEW Facebook page.

The Sound of Mobile, WNSP and 92 Zew Family regrets to announce the passing of Charles “Tim" Camp who departed this life on Saturday, Sept 13, 2025.

An undisputed pillar of the greater Mobile community, part owner of four radio stations: 92.1 FM WZEW, 92.5 FM The Soul of Mobile, 96.5 The Crab and founder of the first 24 hour FM sports radio station in the country-WNSP 105.5 FM-Tim did so much for so many, working tirelessly to bring countless performers and bands to the Gulf Coast, and promoting their music.

An original founder of the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, AL and one of the brains behind Mobile's inaugural, free Ten Sixty Five Music Festival in 2015, Tim Camp was a consummate sound engineer, avid
keyboard player, songwriter, father, brother, husband and friend.

Tim spent nearly 56 years in radio broadcasting and his lasting influence wil be sorely missed. A celebration of Tim's life is forthcoming, date and time to be announced.

His wife, Lee Ann passed away five years ago. Was he the sole owner of WZEW/WNSP, or are other partners involved?

The station's 2023 ownership report with the FCC showed Camp owning 7% of the company. Kenneth Johnson is majority owner with an 82% stake and the GM of the cluster. His son Kenny Johnson owns 11% and is General Sales Manager.

That's good to hear. Hopefully the ownership remains committed to the stations and keeps them around for a long time. They truly are a blessing to have on our airwaves, giving listeners great music and information in a sea of corporate clones and stations selling out to the highest bidder.

Darwin Singleton had a great story on Tim Camp, and how he guided the stations to a new facility just weeks before his passing

Even Matt McCoy, a former WABB personality who's now at the stations recalls the story on how Tim and LeAnn Camp basically hired him over a handshake after getting bounced from iHeart (when 107.3 went from CHR to Urban when 100.3's format got moved to the big stick)
