Charlotte Ratings October 2024 - "The Lake" Rises To The Top

And both CHR's are in 15th and 16th place!

Interesting to see WKQC not placing in the demos race. I understand their decision to straddle the line between classic hits and AC, given the holes in the market, but the music mix is all over the place. WLKO leans heavily on classic hits and sounds more focused, which is clearly paying off. Maybe WKQC can use their Christmas music period to reassess their strategy. Unless there are other demos they’re dominating to generate revenue, it looks like something needs to change.

Lake doesn't fit as a format description! When I think of "Lake" I think of calm...mellow. Some of their music sounds harder than "The Fox". Both The Lake and K-104.7 are used in restaurants and really don't qualify as dining music. Okay before anyone piles on, yes I'm old.

Do they play any AC at all?

I was at a gas station playing 98.7 Simon and heard "Rubberband Man" by The Spinners. 1976! That's "We play everything", not a classic hits station.
I was more so referencing that they play softer gold tracks that a straight ahead classic hits typically avoids, like “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” and “Up Where We Belong.” Still sounds odd next to Blue Oyster Cult…

Interestingly, following WKQC’s Christmas flip, The Lake hasn’t followed suit. I wonder if they are hoping to pick up the non-Christmas listeners since they have been so strong in the regular format. It’s been a few years since they stayed the course.

#1 for 106.5 in A25-54? That is an extremely impressive accomplishment for them! I'm impressed.

The move of WFNZ's sports format to FM is one of the smartest format moves anywhere across the country in the past decade, in my opinion.

WLKO hasn’t beaten WKQC in the Holiday books since they’ve been going head to head again. They might think they‘ll have better results sticking to their normal format, which makes sense considering they were #1 last month. They could just be waiting to flip until later in the month.

They also don’t have a local PD anymore. WLKO is just a corporate playlist, “Premium Choice” or whatever it’s called now. Have any other iHeart stations flipped? Could be doing them all simultaneously like in years past.

I noticed that they added some younger music to the mix when they carried Ace and TJ earlier this year, and there was some improvement in the demos. They went back to full on Medicare recipients as soon as the show was dropped. I’m not sure how much longer they can target such an aging demographic. Clearly not working, and they need a new strategy.

When I heard K 104.7 playing Christmas music, I checked the Lake and heard a promo saying Christmas music begins at noon today, Nov. 11.

It sure did! It’s interesting that the race to flip first isn’t as prevalent as in previous years. WLKO got a jump the past few years, while WKQC scrambled to flip shortly after.

I noticed something similar in Cleveland, where iHeart’s Classic Hits WMJI flipped last week, and Audacy’s AC WDOK is still teasing Christmas music but hasn’t flipped.

To another point about WKQC owning the Christmas position, I agree, but I believe WLKO wound up snagging the #2 slot in most key demos with their Christmas music behind WKQC. I guess they’re content with sharing the listeners and hope some stick around after Christmas music stops for the season. iHeart’s national Christmas music log sounds more cohesive than WKQC’s to my ears.

63 Big WAYS is the only music station that seems to be targeting Medicare recipients.

By the way, I heard an ad today that said even if you planned your funeral at another funeral home, you could move that plan to ours.

I don't even remember which station sounded better today but I ended up on 63 Big WAYS for the most part. Especially when the very long commercial breaks happened.

I lost the Mix 99.5 signal (iHeart, Greensboro). I don't know why because it's not that far away and no other station was interfering. The Fox should have been.

Oh, wait, Bob and Sheri were still on K when I started. So what I heard was mostly Mix.

Didn't Big Ways go off the air 50 years ago? Jack Daniel, Jeff Kent and Bob Lacey are all in their 70s and the programming on K104.7 reflects that. Hell, WKQC was playing 70s/80s music 30 years ago. The old tagline was "the Super Sounds of the Seventies". Nothing has changed. You would think they would have made some effort to keep up with the times.

I may be in the minority, but I HATE Christmas music. I've already taken WKQC and WLKO out of my presets until January.
I'm not a big fan but I wouldn't say hate. It's nice for a little while but it wears out quickly. For me it's the way they do it. A long time ago stations started the holiday music later and gradually, with one or two songs an hour then a gradual ramp up before going all Christmas a week or two prior to December 25th.

There is music that's between Medicare and chainsaw.

I don't mind chainsaw. I just wish they would be more consistent. 102.9 is harder and edgier than 104.7. Their playlist is basically rock from the 80s/90s with a few pop songs sprinkled in for variety - and they're #1 in cume and 6+. 104.7 has had a couple of weeks recently when the music all fit together and the station sounded really good. The next week, back to bipolar programming. If they would stick to something long enough, they might find success.
