Your 870 was probably KRLA. They send their signal out to the Pacific as so many LA area stations do. Years ago before they were on that frequency at night WWL could be heard in Hawaii. I'm pretty sure KFQD on 750 in Anchorage can be heard at times in Hawaii. I didn't log it when I was there, but I think others have.

When I heard WWL on a Saturday night in February of 1965 it was on the north shore north of the Sunset Beach area. Honolulu had KAIM on 870 at 5kw. My memory is that it had signed off for the day. But the Koolau (sp?) mountains really took a bite out of the Honolulu groundwave signals. KAIM may have been on, but weak enough for WWL to override whatever was left of it. My friend also heard WWL (and WBAP, but not WLS) on a car radio in the same area a month or two after me.

That's exactly how I heard WWL in Nov 1978. KAIM signed off sometime after dark. Being that I was on the Honolulu side of Oahu, KAIM splatter was heard on 890 as well so I had to wait for their signoff to get WLS.

Yes, lots of Japan stations and I got one from Australia too.

I don't have my loggings anymore, but I think I heard an Alaskan station while our family was vacationing in Hilo. Probably 20 years ago. It would have been in the winter, at Christmas or just after New Years, when some of Alaska is in twilight or darkness for much of the day.
