Chicago gets another alt rock outlet -- Q101.com goes to WJJG 1530

This may sound crazy to many people, but how about Rock & Roll oldies from the 50s & early 60s on AM where they were originally heard?
I realize this isn't the most desirable demo to say the least, but nobody else is doing it. If you run it with a computer and no DJs it would cost very little to do.

Oh sure, what a great idea... recycled oldies, run by HAL the computer. ::) how soon we forget, it wasn't just the "oldies" that made radio entertaining. It was the personalities, and everything in between.

Getting back on topic, are there any local spots on Q101.com, or on WJJG? Is anyone selling? How is Matt keeping the lights on?

The point is they'd have more listeners than they have now.

With all due respect.....HAL the computer interrupting dead air every couple of minutes with a brief canned remark might be an upgrade over some of the other junk that's out there.

That's not intended as a reflection or knock on Matt. On the contrary, I give him credit for trying.

Countless stations tried the 50's format including 1140 in Las Vegas, 1690 in Chicago, WYAT in New Orleans, KOOL AM gold in Phoenix, which was syndicated out, I heard it in Reno, and in Tampa & Orlando, all on AM. They sounded great, but the demographics & lack of revenue spelled an end to those formats. I forgot an AM outlet in the Philly market, legendary Jerry Blavat was on it, it's now ethnic.
Sad but true, great sounds for us from that era, but little revenue for the station.

That must've been the 'KOOL-GOLD' format offered by SMN beginning in the late '80s.

I'm assuming that was WPGR (now WNWR) though I thought they 'leaned' more R&B oldies. Philly also had WOGL-AM (now WPHT) from 1990 to 1992 or '3 which also was mostly 'Graffiti-Gold'.

Call me crazy and I've probably said it before, but what these marginal AMs should probably do if they want to stay on the air is not only to feature unique, free-form, underground programming, but to also allow up-and-coming talent a place to get their feet wet. I also think such stations might want to try to rely on other means of revenue besides advertising.
