I pity the poor saps in other markets if Chicago is #1 :-\.

Ummmmm, try listening in Boston or New York. Then you'll see that the grass isn't always greener on the other side!

That's what I mean. If the poor radio in Chicago is TOPS in the country, radio elsewhere must be pretty bad. I would have agreed with this rating in the 70's to about 10 years or so ago in Chicago, but now radio sucks big time in the 3rd largest market.

Boston Radio Dial Really SUCKS !

Being also from Boston, I agree 110% with Rapking. It really does suck. When you have about 10 fm frequencies dedicated to rock, and only ONE (and very half-assed, mind you) to any kind of rhythmic/urban, you'll see why we'd KILL for a station like B96 or WGCI in our market...and they wonder why all sorts of pirates are popping up in Boston...

Not to mention that there's absolutely no hope for anything like V103 or Soul 106.3 in Boston. And, True Oldies 94.7 musically outclasses the heck out of the AC-heavy offerings of Boston's WODS or the "classic hits" of WROR.

Back when this top 10 business started, I handicapped Chicago as the most likely #1 market thanks to variety. If you pick a major format, Chicago usually has a station that represents it well.

I was surprised that LA, San Francisco and DFW didn't do better, a bit surprised by Washington's good showing and not surprised at all that New York and Boston were left off.

We'll trade you your active rock, hard rock/metal stations for the very crappy B96 and GCI!!!!!!!! Hell, we'll even give em to ya for a case of beer!!!!!

Chicago doesn't have a true rocker.

I predict that Emmis will be forced to sell either Q101 or The Loop in 2008 just to satisfy their screaming stock-holders and get their stock above $5 again. The new owners will see a huge hole for rock in Chicago. They'll also note how PPM loves rock in Philly and Houston.

Because they paid too much, the new owners will have to research how to quickly improve the ratings. They'll fire the "brand manager" that Emmis dumped on them and hire a talented PD that will fix the music. Soon the station will quickly climb to #1 for men 18 - 45 in five out of six PPM monthly reports.

This will be accomplished by May 2009.

Other predictions?

Well, it is really boring to have a dozen stations that can be summed up with Aerosmith, Dave Matthews Band and Celine Dion. It doesn't take too many CDs to approximate the lack of variety that is Boston radio. Or, alternately, you can check out the offerings in a small market like Springfield, Rockford or Green Bay. Though many of those places have better oldies stations than Boston! ;D

If that lack of variety is heavenly bliss for you, more power to ya!
