CHR/pop in day to CHR/RHy at nite????

How mnay CHR's are pop in the day and then after the 4pm, 5pm or 6pm change to CHR/RHY with a few rock tracks. I know about 3-4 yrs ago WRVQ Q94, Richmond did that. THey would have a different playlist at night, and some of the songs they played in primetime and at night, they would never play in the day and vice versa. You could tell that in the day they were leaning to grab adults, and at night the adults kids.

THey do not that anymore, as they elminated alot of hip hop tracks til very recently they have added alot back into the playlist.

But how many CHR's are pop at day and RHY leaning by night (with few pop/rock songs) ?

3-4AM - 3PM or so: Adult CHR
3PM-7PM: CHR

It's always been common for CHRs to skew younger and hipper during evenings and nights. In the late 80s a lot of CHRs would save the Hard Rock and Rap hits till after 6 PM. California CHRs were especially reluctant to play Hard Rock during the daytime hours, while at the same time were amongst the most supportive of playing Rap early in the day.

Yes. Clear Channel's "B-104" (104.1 WAEB-FM) in Allentown, PA is basically Hot AC during the daytime (they even use the liner "'80s, '90s and Today") and CHR at night. Same thing with 94.5 WPST in Trenton, NJ. They play a LOT of '80s music during the daytime... Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Peter Gabriel, the Bangles, Prince, etc.... so they're still CHR during the daytime, but the clock gets rewound to the hot hits of two decades ago!

B-97 in Bloomington Indiana Leans ADULT during the day, even has a 70s and 80s LUNCH HOUR, but at night, after 6.00 P.M its pretty much 90% Rhyhmic. A few other notable mentions would be 106.9 Kicks Fm in Cookeville Tennessee, during the day, they are a 90s and now Hot-ACish CHR, and evenings and nights are rhythmic leaning. I think they do this in order to keep it more WORK- and office friendly, that way offices and small bussiness can listen at work, without too much worry of being offensive. I would say the DAYTIME adverstisers have alot to do with this as well. I think its a good idea for Chrs to do this,,, I mean who wants to hear lil-John going Ye-----ah at 7 in the morning.

Alot of how a CHR leans depends on the market (competition, demographics overall, etc). There are plenty of markets where CHR's main competitor is the Rhythmic station in town, so those CHR's MUST skew slightly more urban all day than some of your more "white bread" markets where CHR's can get away with leaning more adult during the day and then skewing younger at night.

Just because it's 8am, doesn't mean that a 25-year-old woman doesn't want to hear "Yeah!" In these markets, there are plenty of advertisers to cater to that 17-22 demographic. Not even a decade ago, it wasn't out of the ordinary for CHR's to do some serious dayparting of titles. Nowadays with music formats not as broad as they were before, there isn't that much dayparting.

Here in Cleveland, KISS-FM leans more rhythmic all day than your average CHR because it has to! Their main competitor in the demo is Radio One's CHR/RHY. But if you drive 2 hours south to Columbus and it's almost a completely different sounding CHR (WNCI).
 
They don't have to... they could go the other way and NOT play those. Some people don't want to hear Soul Survivor all day. I bet a lot of workplaces would shy away from playing a station that leaned ryth during the day. It's a basic decision that has to be made. Look at the numbers, etc.

If they didn't want to get their butts stomped on in their demo, they must! KISS/Cleveland is programmed very well and the PD and MD know their ish! The whole "workplace" theory for quite a few CHR's (depending on the market) went ou the window long ago.
