CHRB 1140 High River, AB heard this morning in S. Michigan

I finally made myself wake up early enough to catch some sunrise DX and I have to say this is something I might want to make a habit of doing! I tried my two big target stations and heard nothing on 690 (Have been trying for CBU for years now). 1130 had a weak KFAN (Minneapolis) and another very weak station fighting with it. This MAY have been CKWX, but I have no way of knowing for sure because nearby WDFN (Detroit) turned on their daytime switch just before 8:00, blowing away any other station I heard on the frequency.

I tuned the radio up a tic to 1140 and ID'ed a station from Kentucky, but fading up immediately after the Kentucky station was a very pleasant surprise featuring 'High River' mentions, 'AM 1140' station monikers and religious programming. After trying for at least three years, I have finally logged CHRB! I feel like I might have been the last holdout in the Midwest for this station, as i've read about several other people logging it. I've even tentatively logged it a couple times, but nothing was concrete enough to positively ID it until this morning. Just seconds after ID'ing them, the IBOC from 1130 reared it's ugly head, leaving 1140 useless! CHRB is 1,481 miles away from my location. The 2nd longest catch of the season behind my KFI logging in October.

I have a very small window for logging Vancouver on 1130. The east coast sunrise pretty much spells the end of WBBR, and WDFN seems to turn on the daytime switch just before 8:00. In this small time frame, the only thing I have to contend with on 1130 is Minneapolis, and even then they are a weak signal. Logging CBU on 690 will be more difficult. WLW IBOC makes it virtually impossible to hear anything but a strong signal on 690. Detroit is also the home of a daytimer on 690. I think 1130 will be the easiest (for a nearly 2,000 mile distant station anyways!) station to try to log here.

Cool catch, Lawppy!

Which radio? The Realistic 350?

Any new catch on 1140 gets points. We're a time zone east of you, so the 1140ers from Canada were CJTR Quebec and CBI Nova Scotia. There was also a little daytimer called WCJW from 'upstate' New York, a sunset catch from near Buffalo. It would be swell to hear another Alberta station, although as far east as we are, CHRB is a long shot.

Re your maneuvering through the sunrise pattern changes: We were fortunate back in the New York City share-time days of WBNX and WAWZ on 1380 when one (or the other) would be late for the switch. WAWZ could be counted on a lot of the time to be late, so in that window would sneak WNRI RI, WAMS in Delaware -- even WLCY in St. Pete at times. WEVD and WPOW on 1330 (separate tower sites) also were out of synch with their switches at times.

Great time to listen, during those intervals, as you know. Now if I could only arrange to wake up at sunrise for more DX effectiveness instead of dragging it in .....

(Btw: Does WDFN use the positioner 'Faithtalk Radio'? Thought I heard a Detroit mention a few weeks back -- at 1:30 in the afternoon)

Stve,

I heard this on nothing more than a GE Superadio. CHRB is only my second Alberta station, the other being '960 The Fan' from Calgary. Been trying for CBR (1010) from Calgary too.

This was a very small window I heard this in yesterday. WRVA was already gone, leaving nothing between me and High River. However, I tried again this morning at the exact same time and WRVA was pounding in, so conditions definitely play a role too. 1130 didn't sound much different. WDFN still signed on just before 8:00.

'Faith Talk' is 1500 WLQV
1130 WDFN is a sports talk affiliate.

The CRTC allows it. Being on the other side of the border I don't know any of the guidelines or stipulations, but they do have religious stations in Canada. They're just not as common as they are here in the US.

If the CRTC doesn't allow religious broadcasting, then CJMR in the Toronto area (Mississauga) has been a serious violator for quite some time!
