Chris Cornell, Lead Singer of Soundgarden, Dies at 52

Grammy award-winning rock star Chris Cornell — frontman for rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave — has died at 52, according to the Associated Press.

Cornell died in Detroit while on tour with Soundgarden, according to representative Brian Bumbery. In a statement to the AP, Bumbery said his death was “sudden and unexpected.” No cause of death was given.

The performer first came to fame in the late ’80s as the lead singer of Soundgarden, the Seattle-based group at the forefront of the grunge rock movement along with fellow Seattle bands Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

He also contributed the song “Seasons” to Cameron Crowe’s 1992 movie “Singles” and appeared on screen with other members of Soundgarden in the director’s cinematic ode to the Seattle music scene.

Soundgarden disbanded in 1997 but reunited in 2010 and has toured regularly since then.

i hear the news and the reports are saying he hung himself to death in a possible suicide. sad to hear of his passing, i grew up to my teen years listen to some of his hits from Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of The Dog and his solo career on both 97.1 The Eagle (KEGL) and 94.5/102.1 The Edge (KDGE) back in the late 90s/early 2000s when i first discovered modern and hard rock music.

he was a very great singer and an icon to the early 90s Grunge movement. he's now dead like Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (who committed suicide by gun on April 5, 1994 only for his body to be found in his home days later on April 8), Layne Staley of Alice In Chains (died from a drug overdose on April 5, 2002 only to be found on April 19, 2 weeks later), and Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pliots (who died of a drug overdose on December 3, 2015 inside his tour bus while touring). the only lead singer left of the big 5 of grunge is Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.

RIP Chris Cornell.

SNL aired an episode which was joined in progress after the hockey game, in which Soundgarden performed. They generally only include one of the performances in these classic episodes. They must have made the decision to air that episode because of Cornell's death. For some strange reason, Jim Carrey and the others who were dancing to "What Is Love" were STILL doing it without the music as they introduced the band.
