Christina Aguilar butchers National Anthem at SB XLV

So, when will the NFL ever get singers that can sing the National Anthem like it's supposed to be performed; and get rid of the American Idol wannabes that put their own embellishment on this revered piece of music? Christina Aguilar is probably the most air-headed performer they could have gotten for the job, at this year's Super Bowl. All in the name of diversity, I'm sure. Next time, they need to pick a mature artist who knows the National Anthem by heart (because they grew up singing it at every American high school football game) and can sing it as a honor to this great nation and it's flag. Not to show everyone what a great entertainer (in their own mind) they are.

You just defined Aguilera, you know.

You may want Wayne Newton or Andy Williams to sing the anthem, but it ain't gonna happen. I'm hoping for Akon and Jay-Z. They are mainstream, credible and cool.

I agree

The girl who sang "America the Beautiful" before the anthem would have been great. As I was watching Aquilera, I remarked, "This is so much worse than Jose Feliciano in 1968 !"
The only thing that would have made it bearable would have been a wardrobe malfunction.

I'm impressed by your suggestions, which make you sound cool, too. I would prefer Lady Gaga over the two you mentioned, although I don't know what that says about me.

I watched the SSB fail on the internets due to all the scuttlebutt. I washed out my ears by listening to Mendelsson's setting of Psalm 42 on Youtube.

Lady Gaga? I'm worried about you, jd. ;D

How about inviting choirs from High Schools and Colleges across the country. Check the UIL contests for the top choirs or something like that.... who knows???

poops

In advance she said that she has been singing our National Anthem since she was seven years old. Uh huh...and other no talents tell us all about their experience in the business.

She sucked, plain and simple - and when you are performing at the Super Bowl, the least you can do after bleaching the color out of your hair is to put a rinse on, get a trim and get some style going on. Just a tip from an old broad who came from a generation in which grace, class and culture were called for in public. And by God, we knew The Star Spangled Banner!

Maybe it's high time to say to hell with tradition and not do formalities such as The National Anthem anymore! Frankly I DON'T think we should have one but that's another matter.

This has nothing to do with Houston move this thread

I wonder why they didn't get someone from "North Texas" (as the official name of the host city for the SuperBowl is given) to sing the anthem. At least when Houston hosted the Super Bowl Beyonce sang the national anthem. I am sure there are plenty of singers from DFW area would have jumped at the chance to sing. Kelly Clarkson comes to mind.

I believe The NFL should pay more attention to this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMmIKoC3DQQ

Jim Cornelison, A Chicago native and Classically-Trained Tenor for Chicago's Lyric Opera has been a strong fixture with The NHL's Chicago Blackhawks, who also has been performing for The Cubs & The White Sox. His Mentor happens to The PA Announcer for The Cubs-Wayne Messmer-who also happens to be a singer as well. While he is'nt singing, Cornelison's day job happens to be a real estate agent.

If the NFL plans to have somebody perform the anthem at Next Year's Super Bowl in Indy(If There is one because of the scheduled lock-out), They should get either Jim Cornelison or Indianapolis native & Christian singer Sandi Patti. Sandi(Who happens to be a Soprano)also has a real powerful singing voice, in which she might tear off the roof to The Luke.(Lucas Oil Stadium)

**The only thing that would have made it bearable would have been a wardrobe malfunction.** Bob Branson

I don't agree Bob. I don't think even having Christina pop a few buttons would have saved the musical parts of this broadcast. Especially that god[-awful excuse for a halftime show.

I think the only thing that will stop embarrassments like Aguilera's mangling of the anthem is to, once and for all, stop inviting popular song stylists to sing it. They should start inviting real singers, and they should be contractually required to sing the song the way it's written. And the crowd should be invited and encouraged to sing along.

Better yet, start inviting college or high school choirs to sing it. Like you, I'm sick of hearing the anthem that represents America butchered by the Flavor of the Week pop music stylist.

One of those after the news shows reported, while playing back old clips of her other performances, that she's been singing the National Anthem since she was a little girl,. They then proceeded to show and play her making the same flub with each performance while defending and covering for her. "What so proudly we watched....".

Gimme a break already.

GaGa works. But only if she arrives on the field in an egg, like her Grammy arrival tonight. That's putting "entertaining" back in entertainment.

Why is everyone so serious about this? Unfortunately, we got one of the worlds least inspiring anthems, and one that nearly nobody can sing well. Let's show the American ability to imrovise be personal stylings which shows that individuality that is supposed to be at our core!
