Christmas music on 39.9 MyFM until New Year's Eve

I wonder what many of you think of this, as I heard in a commercial that Mick Lee has said they have a petition online at their website http://939myfm.iheart.com that you can sign the petition as they have heard from listeners past of playing Christmas music until New Year's Eve. Where in year's past Christmas music moves to the HD's channel for the rest of the year on December 26th, until at least through New Years and then done again until the following November when the flip happens again for Christmas for that year. And the station goes back to the regular music of 80's until now, last year if I am remembering correctly they extended it through the weekend where the regular music started playing again the following Monday after Christmas. Now Christmas day this year is on Sunday, which means one week from today is Christmas Eve, and two weeks from today is New Year's Eve. As New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are 1 week away from Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. But what is your thoughts if you support it, all you have to do is sign the petition either viva your Facebook page (if you have one) or enter your e-mail address. And no I am not making this up, but if they go on until then when should the Christmas music stop, 11:59 PM on New Year's eve that the last Christmas song of the year finishing at that time, with the switch back to regular music happening at midnight or shortly after on January 1st, 2017.

I find it interesting that the station wants to continue the Christmas music past Christmas and until New Years. The station ratings shoot up during the rating periods from November to December. They usually top the period in the Holiday Ratings and shortly after January they head South. My guess is the new rating book will come out Monday and if they keep the music flowing till January their success will continue. I would like to see the station flip to soft AC like the Breeze; Most business including offices and restaurants would continue to listen to the station. Look at the high ratings for WFEZ and WDUV. We have way too many stations playing the same rotation of tunes. I love listening to 87.7 and hearing some oldies. Wish they would put Show together with Business again and bring back personalities; For songs I have an iPod.

This is very unusual. Even though Christmas Music drives up WLIT's ratings, each station that switches to holiday music from its regular format walks a fine line. After all, many listeners DON'T like the format. They either tune away or put up with it, especially if they are in a workplace where the station is played on the company's speakers.

Yes, people are still in a holiday mood, even after midnight on Dec. 25. And since the workday holiday this year is on Dec. 26, since Christmas falls on a Sunday, I guess some stations may play Christmas music one additional day. (In Canada, Christmas songs are sprinkled in every Dec. 26, since it's Boxing Day, an official holiday. So even if Christmas falls on a weekday, Canadians have the following day off too.)

But I wonder what WLIT is thinking, putting it to a vote? The petition says they need 100,000 votes to keep playing Christmas music, and at this point, they've only reached 6% of the goal. It also says you can keep voting every day. The trouble with popular votes on radio stations is that listeners don't really know what they want. They always say they don't like stations that keep repeating the same songs over and over. Then they listen to stations that keep playing the same songs over and over. What they REALLY mean is they don't want to hear songs THEY DON'T LIKE played over and over.

Notice that even in the Christmas format, most stations only play about 300 or so Christmas songs, and play them over and over. Holly Jolly Christmas, Feliz Navidad, All I Want for Christmas Is You, these songs rotate every three hours or so every year from Mid-November to Christmas Day. I like the format. But I wonder about WLIT giving listeners a vote on continuing the format past Dec. 26?

That's because there are only about 300 well-known Christmas songs in existence. If one goes traditional, it's only about 150, even if you include Elvis, Spike Jones, Alvin & the Chipmunks, Stan Freberg, Chuck Berry, and the Beach Boys.

Interesting point.

FWIW, I put together a Christmas playlist every year for my computer and stream it. Long story short, I could pretty much put on as many songs as I want (this year I'm using Spotify). But every year, I always end up with about 200 songs. Give or take a dozen or so (191 this year to be exact). When I put together other playlists in other genres, I'm usually at about 500-600. I've got one playlist (50s and 60s oldies) that's over 1600.

Is WLIT's Holiday playlist really 300 songs? It's always struck me as tighter than my own Holiday playlists. 150 tracks or so. As for going for an extra week, I'm kind of neutral on that. I could argue either way, although I would come down on keeping it going until the 26th this year, given that the legal holiday should keep the holiday mood going for an extra day.

And i bet you are right on that as Christmas music brings o them their best ratings off the year, and in less you are a fan of music 80's tis now you have no other reason to listen to the station, on less you are a fan of the shows on the station. But I would have to imagine that people at some point would have to get tired ion listening to Christmas music. In November once they make the flip to Christmas music that is all they play until they flip back to their regular songs. other stations which included K-Hits and WLS FM might throw in some CHirsmtas music in December while are playing non Christmas songs as well.
