Christmas Music Station Hits #1 in Nearly All Big Markets

I looked at the December 2021 ratings in the top 25 markets. Remember that only in part of the survey period were these stations playing Christmas music. It's amazing how many stations hit #1.

1. NYC -- WLTW -- #1, almost hitting double digits. And for some reason WLTW waited longer than other iHeart stations to flip.

2. LA -- KOST -- #1, hitting double digits. More than double the ratings of the #2 station.

3. Chicago -- WLIT -- #1 hitting double digits.

4. San Francisco -- KOIT -- #2 and the only station to have more than a million listeners in cume.

5. Dallas -- KDGE -- #1, and only one of two stations with more than a million in cume.

6. Houston -- KODA -- #1, hitting double digits and nearly 2 million in cume.

7. Atlanta -- No major secular station does the Christmas format.

8. Washington -- WASH -- #1, hitting double digits and the only station reaching a million in cume.

9. Philadelphia -- WBEB -- #1, hitting double digits and the only station reaching a million in cume.

10. Boston -- WMJX -- #2, the only station hitting a million in cume.

11. Miami -- WLYF -- #3 It has only been doing the All-Christmas format for a couple of years.

12. Seattle -- KWRM -- #1. It's one of three full power secular stations switching to Christmas music.

13. Phoenix -- KESZ -- #1, double digits, more than twice the listeners as the #2 station, the only station getting a million in cume.

14. Detroit -- WNIC -- #1, more than triple the listeners of the #2 station, the only station getting a million in cume.

15. Minneapolis -- KQQL -- #1, in double digits.

How did the #16 market do? I suspect 101.1 KOSI did very well.

KOSI Denver was #1. But it didn't hit double digits as other Christmas stations did. I'm sure it will be in double digits for the Holiday ratings period.

Some stations must have ranked high enough in December year after year to know that they can switch to all Christmas music for a few days or for a whole week without foregoing too much revenue. (And perhaps run an automated format during that time to give staff extra time off.) At any rate they have to tell the advertisers in advance what format will be run during which hours and then the advertisers will choose when to run spots.

Yes, but in Boston, 98.5 the Sports Hub beat WMJX's Christmas music format, thanks to their Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins.

Some of the clear channel news-talk stations around the nation aired regular programming on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
