A tip of the hat for trying in-house local production again, but it's still an AM station...and the same business model failed a decade ago. Are people more willing to try AM these days? I doubt it.

Oh...it can be done, and done quite successfully. You just have to have someone in there running the show that knows what they're doing. It's a whole different animal/mentality than the major market/ad agency/national business mindset.

I hope they can make a go of it-but in the back of my mind, I just think their plan is to find the right group to lease most or all of the time. I do not want that, THEY do not want that, but their website even lists a contact for interested parties that wish to do that very thing. I wish them luck, and long live GOOD local radio. KGBC and Galveston would benefit from a little local love.

Are the studios still on Pellican Island? How did their facility do after Ike? I heard Dave Lane voicing a spot, so I guess he is still there. Anybody know where Steve Lee is?

I'm all for this, as I've stated before, because Galveston desperately needed its own service again. Where I fail to see the logic in all of this (and hopefully dade, jd, or someone in the know can help me out here) is why is there being such an effort made towards serving Galveston specifically when KGBC has an application on file to move to Dayton and abandon Galveston altogether? Did the FCC side with KGOW on their PTD, or has Siga changed their mind on moving KGBC to the KLVL site and decided to remain on the Island?

I'm all for this, as I've stated before, because Galveston desperately needed its own service again.

Too bad the (former) 104.9 FM in Galveston (which once had the KRTX call) didn't make it as a stand alone station. Most people have probably forgotten that it was the first station to be called "The Wave" in this market--had a halfway decent New Age Contemporary format in the late 80's, as I recall. They tried one or two other formats as well.

The 104.9 frequency later became a simulcast of various Univision (and predecessors) stations, and eventually moved to 105.3, now silent, awaiting an upgrade.

As "The Wave" they once applied for the KGWV call, but I don't think it was ever actually used. An obscure station, much like the original KSTB, or the early incarnations of 92.1.

KGBC is broadcasting out on the island. I just came from there. Still a lot of work to be done with everything. Driving in parts of Galveston is still gives many the creaps. Many buildings and houses busted up bad. Yes the radio station had a lot of damage and is still being worked on.
