Citadel going forward - talent for music stations to be fed from other markets

From Jerry Del Colliano's Inside Music Media:

3. Citadel will be adopting what it calls a new approach to on-air talent. They call it “Marquee Talent” from Citadel-owned major market stations voice tracking shifts in other markets. [EDIT]

I imagine that eventually each format is going to have a "marquee talent" for each time slot. A jock with some foresight might want to send his updated demo to corporate in order to get one of those gigs before his local job is eliminated completely.

I’ve called just about every shot with this guy and with this company and each day we see more evidence that Citadel is not and does not intend to be an operator.

Citadel is planning to become a holding company for station facilities, real estate and licenses.

When the pre-packaged bankruptcy gets approved, the lenders who Citadel can’t pay are going to become the owners and caretakers of these assets.

And lenders aren't interested (nor do they know how) to execute good radio. They aren't in the radio business. All they want to do is make the balance sheet attractive so they can sell the group to the highest bidder and get back as much as they can.

Re: Citadel going forward - talent for music stations to be fed from other marke

Uh, you also edited out some of my comments.

?

Holy Crap this sounds like a huge step towards the scenario I've felt radio stations have been working towards. A building with a computer, a sattellite dish, a transmitter and no local talent. It's bad enough as it is with all the syndicated talk that can now be heard. But this is the first major step I've heard that pretty much blows up the local music scene too.

So pretty soon the competition in this market will be a matter of who sucks the least

Also didn't cut off the italics tag properly...

Oh well, as long as companies like Beasley aren't considering going that route... then again, I can just imagine you voicetracking overnights on oldies WNCT in Greenville, NC...

Sounds like they are going to do what Clear Channel is doing now.Pro-fm and Lite DJ's get a christmas card in the color pink.

The writing was really on the wall. Pretty soon if you don't live in New York or Los Angeles, you won't even be able to get a job on air. Local DJ's will be a thing of the past. Citadel seems to be doing their part to reach that goal.

But on the bright side this will take all the pressure off the PDs in learning how to program for a PPM market. They'll concentrate on their morning shows and the rest of the day will run itself.

I agree.

Speaking of PPM and what we know about it, I realize it isn't here yet but what the hell is PRO-FM doing afternoons with these long drawn out reports. I hear some chick named Barbie Jo on with Davey Morris doing some sort of entertainment report. I don't know if it's a regular thing but it goes on and on and on with Davey uh-huh'ing when she babbles on. It's a CHR station! This thing went at least five minutes and probably longer. A year from now that would be suicidal. People are just so totally unprepared.

You mean "they'll concentrate on BOARD OP-ING their PIPED IN morning shows..."

It is actually cutting edge. Citadel was at the airport when their ship came in. Now they are kind of in a rowboat trying to catch up.
