Its possible WCBS was having transmitter issues, but every time I've checked they have been sounding fine. Its possible that since this was during the morning you were still getting skywave towards the west while skywave towards the east had been diminished since they get daylight sooner.
WCBS has been weak here in VA, so I suspect something related to Sandy may have them at a lower power. 1010 WINS has also been more in the hash the last few days too. WABC is normal.
I believe that from south FL in 1985 I caught CKLQ when it was on 1570. Got a letter from them w/ letterhead saying 880! (They were to move there shortly after.)
I don't have the recording...wish I did....sounded like DJ saying "Porter Wagoner" & "Q Country News." That had to have been 1900 miles at 10k.
Of course, that was just before the FCC allowed everyone & his brother to operate on the Mexican clears.
(I also got CKLM near Montreal in the 1970s & CHML 900 in early 80s. Always cool to catch a Canadian from FL on the Mex clears!)
Canadians on some Mexican clears are pretty common here in the Midwest. CKDM is relatively easy on 730, and CKAC also sometimes turns up. CHML on 900 can be a little problematic, but is usually do-able. CKSB is common here on 1050,,,,especially pre-dawn. And "back in the day" CFOR and CHLO were common on 1570.
