Classic '50s and '60s TV series set in States other than New York or California.

This subject may have been discussed before but during the early days of TV, it seemed that the Vast Majority of Television series were based either in New York or California. The ones that weren't were based in a Fictitious town in Real States (Andy Griffith Show- Mayberry, North Carolina) or in towns that could be anywhere yet the States they are in are Never mentioned (Father Knows Best- Springfield, Leave It To Beaver - Mayfield, etc.). Besides Andy Griffith and Hawaii-50 (& Hawaiian Eye), what other TV series from the early days set in states other than New York or California? (And Bewitched doesn't count since Connecticut is so close to New York and you took it for granted that McMahon and Tate offices where in New York City).

I Dream of Jeannie - Cocoa Beach, FL
Get Smart - Washington, DC
Studs' Place - Chicago
M Squad - Chicago
The Untouchables - Chicago

If you want to include the '70s:

One Day at a Time - Indianapolis
Good Times - Chicago
The Bob Newhart Show - Chicago
Alice - Phoenix
WKRP in Cincinnati - uh, Zanesville? ;D

I forgot about I Dream of Jeannie and Get Smart. As far as the others on the list, Studs' Place and M Squad were before my time.

More '50s & '60s:
Banacek - Boston
Ironside - San Francisco
The FBI - Washington DC

More '70s:
Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley - both Milwaukee
The Tony Randall Show - Philadelphia
Temperatures Rising - Washington DC
Vega$ - Guess where? ;D
McMillan & Wife - San Francisco
The Streets of San Francisco - Duh! ;D

Gunsmoke - Dodge City
Bonanza - Nevada
The Rifleman - New Mexico Territory
...of course these are just a few of many westerns where the setting was explicitly identified.

Sky King - Arizona

"Surfside 6"--Miami
"Tallahassee 7000" (Walter Matthau's only series)--guess where?
"Bourbon Street Beat" and "Longstreet"--New Orleans
"The Farmer's Daughter"--Washington, DC
"Here Come The Brides"--Seattle (circa 1870s)

Reminds me of a t-shirt that Cpl. Klinger once wore on M*A*S*H...

Toledo: The Gateway to Zanesville

"The Fugitive" took place all over the country, but Dr. Richard Kimble lived in Stafford, Indiana (which was generally considered to be either Indy or Fort Wayne); Of course, the real doctor on whom Kimble was based, Sam Sheppard, lived in suburban Cleveland.

I'm excluding Westerns and historical dramas. Yes, The Adventures of Robin Hood was set in Nottingham and Sherwood Forest. :D

And some shows were set in towns the name of which was not mentioned or had a fictional name but was clearly in an identifiable state or region: Mayberry is in North Carolina. Peyton Place is in New England. Hooterville is in the Midwest.

Route 66 -Almost everywhere except any location on Route 66.
The Sheriff of Cochise - Bisbee, Arizona
You'll Never Get Rich (The Phil Silvers Show) - Fort Baxter, KS; Camp Fremont, CA
I Remember Mama - San Francisco
Hawaii Five-O - Honolulu
The Real McCoys - San Fernando Valley, CA

And the Patty Duke Show was set in Brooklyn Heights, for the benefit of those of us who continue to state that Brooklyn is NOT New York.

The Halls of Ivy (Ivy, a fictional Midwestern town)

Fibber McGee & Molly (Wistful Vista, another fictional Midwestern town)

...Bill Quinn co-created both series, and Fibber McGee & Molly originated on WMAQ Radio in Chicago as Smackout, and later The Johnson's Wax Program, named for the sponsor, which was (and still is) based in Racine, Wisconsin...

Classic soap operas:

As the World Turns - Oakdale, Illinois
General Hospital - Port Charles, New York (Between Rochester and Buffalo)

Classic shows:

Gilligan's Island - Somewhere in the South Pacific, but originating from Honolulu, Hawaii

70s series

Mary Tyler Moore - Minneapolis, Minnesota

I believe the Ricardos and Mertzes lived in Westport on
those "Lucy In Connecticut" episodes.

Other soaps:

"One Life To Live"--Llanview, Pennsylvania (a fictional suburb
of Philadelphia)
"All My Children"--Pine Valley, Pennsylvania (ditto)
"The Young And The Restless"--Genoa City, Wisconsin (a real
town but not by any means the metropolis pictured on the show)

There's often been a dispute about where Salem, the town on
"Days Of Our Lives," is. Vincent Terrace, writing in the '70s, said
it was in Massachusetts, and I've seen a couple other sources that
say the same thing. Currently, however, Salem is presumably in
Illinois. Anybody know where Salem is?

If you read the Title of this post, it is SET IN STATES OTHER THAN NEW YORK OR CALIFORNIA, not CITIES OTHER THAN NEW YORK CITY OR LOS ANGELES! The last time I LOOKED SAN FRANCISCO WAS IN CALIFORNIA AND BROOKLYN WAS IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK!!!! BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!

Really? It's not like any laws have been broken - if you don't like the response, just move on. No need to raise your blood pressure over it and no need to abuse another poster over it, especially when he was not the only one drifting from the topic.

I wouldn't have said anything if it were for the fact that the poster that posted that particular responce JUMPED someones case on another TOPIC for drifting off topic. I was just reminding him to stay on topic since he made such a BIG DEAL about others drifting off topic in other post.

Well, I'm not getting my blood pressure up, but somebody mentioned The Real McCoys - San Fernando Valley. That's not only in California, it's in Los Angeles...with a small exception or two, like the city of San Fernando, which (if I remember correctly) is it's own city. But 90% of the SF Valley is within the LA city limits.

That's OK though -sometimes the off-topic drifts are more interesting than the on-topic remarks, and I'm sure I've been guilty of drifting myself.

"General Hospital - Port Charles, New York (Between Rochester and Buffalo)"

If you look at the opening titles which have showed an aerial view of the downtown skyline (which clearly highlight the Xerox, Bausch & Lomb and Chase Bank office towers) and occasional dialogue which places Port Charles just over an hour east of Buffalo on Lake Ontario, "Port Charles" is clearly Rochester.

If I actually watched soaps, I would have known that, having lived in the area for nearly 20 years. :)
