Classic Hits vs. Classic Rock: Portland and Manchester

I find it interesting that Classic Rock and Classic Hits are such popular formats in Northern New England. In Portland, WBLM is Classic Rock and WFNK is Classic Hits, although both stations share most of the same songs and I assume the same audience. And both always get great ratings.

Even places where I would expect to hear a Top 40 or AC station, I often hear one of these stations. I was in a Subway sandwich shop. Two college students were behind the counter, one male, one female, and WFNK was on the radio. They were listening to music made before they were born. A 50-something guy was running the bottle return at a Hanaford Supermarket and he had a small radio with WFNK on. I went into a Cumberland Farms and the 30-something guy behind the counter had WBLM on. I can't think of another market where two Classic Hits/Classic Rock stations are so strong, both in signal and in ratings.

And when I was recently in the Manchester area, I was surprised at how similar WMLL has gotten to WFNQ. WMLL started out as a true Classic Rock station, but now they only play those Classic Rock songs that also scored as Top 40 hits, almost identical to WFNQ. They now use the phrase "Classic Hits" instead of "Classic Rock." I'm sure listeners who prefer a harder-edged, deeper tracks Classic Rock station are disappointed. But for me, I thought both stations sounded great.

It's also funny if you're in an area of NH where you can hear both WFNK and WFNQ. Both stations have the exact same playlist. So if one is playing Jump by Van Halen, the other is as well, maybe a minute or two off. When 104.9 Wolfeboro was also a Frank station, they'd also be playing the same song, although that's not true anymore.

The "Frank" stations in Northern New England share the same playlist and often have the same promotions and special features, such as the Memorial Day Top 1000. I don't think that the jocks are voicetracked from station to station, but I'm not completely sure. They are a pretty solid station though.

I also like WBLM a lot, however their playlist can sometimes be all over the place. That's not always a bad thing--perhaps I'm not as used to it in this PPM world. And they also have a massive A to Z list.

Another honorable mention: between Portland and Manchester is another good classic rocker, 102.1 and 105.3 The Shark. There's nothing really special about them, just a good, focused classic rock station.

I don't think I'd call them a focused classic rocker. For at least the past couple years, they've been closer to classic hits than classic rock. Looking at their playlist on http://wshk.tunegenie.com/, would a classic rock station play:

Id Really Love To See You - England Dan & John F
Drift Away - Dobie Gray
Diamond Girl - Seals & Crofts
(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
Your Mama Dont Dance - Loggins and Messina
I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash
If You Leave Me Now - Chicago

All these are just within the last 2 hours! They haven't been saying "Classic Rock" in a few years, instead they say "The Seacoast's Leader in Classics." Definitely closer to FNK than BLM.

I wonder if the Shark tweaked their format to compete with WXEX in Sanford, which is classic hits. The timing, a couple of years, is about right.

Yeah, I forgot to mention The Shark 102.1 & 105.3, Portsmouth, which also leans toward the Top 40 side of Classic Rock.

And notice WROR Boston remains a long-time Classic Hits station in the original sense of that phrase. Almost all songs that were heard on Rock stations. Maybe every few hours they'll play a Motown song but that's about it. They haven't moved more pop, even with the demise of WODS.

Meanwhile this format is rare or non-existant in other parts of the U.S. Classic Rock stations sound like WZLX and Oldies/Classic Hits stations sound like the former WODS.

(I've said before that I wish Oldies stations hadn't appropriated the term "Classic Hits." Originally Classic Hits stations were like WROR and Frank. No jingles, no Motown, no Four Seasons, no Olivia Newton-John. They sounded like the old rock stations we listened to, except with the harder edged and deeper cuts songs minimized. And Oldies stations had jingles, lots of R&B, DJs who talked up the song intros, contests, reverb. Just because Oldies stations no longer play much music before the late 60s doesn't mean they're "Classic Hits" stations now.)

I've noticed the occasional Simon & Garfunkel tune, but it must have been a while since I've last listened. They do seem to sound more like Frank now. Perhaps they're trying to distance themselves from WHEB?
