Classic Hits Vs The Greatest Hits of All Time WCBS-FM

I think WCBS-FM should have used "The Greatest Hits of all Time" instead of Classic Hits...
I think they would have made more people happier if they used that slogan instead.

Right now the station's image is more like a Classic Rock station which everyone knows tends not to play more MOR kind of Oldies which I'm not hearing any songs from the station at all.

Strange though as they haven't played any of the MOR songs that were played during their promo before the format flip. I'm hearing too much disco and late 70s. What happened to MOR songs from 1972 to 1975 ? Why so little music of the 1960s if any songs per hour ?

I hope this will not continue as more songs are needed even in a Classic hits format. Not complaining but lets have more of an variety not playing the same type of songs in a repetition manner

Maybe its too early and I might be wrong...I will give wCBS-FM the benefit of the doubt and hope the play list gets better.

First, I'm not sure where you're listening from, but the station has never today mentioned the positioner of "Classic Hits." Not once. Nor has it mentioned "oldies" ... it HAS been mentioned (and sung, jingle wise) as "The Greatest Hits ... CBS-FM" or "101.1.

And I've heard quite a few of those mass appeal MOR songs you mentioned ... maybe they are being dayparted. (I wouldn't doubt it one bit.) I heard, this afternoon, Carpenters, Billy Joel, The Temptations, Tom Jones, Maxine Nightengale, Elvis, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears ... even Herb Alpert & the TJB ("A Taste of Honey") Roy Orbison and others too numerous (but sparingly played) to list.

<<Oh my mistake...I think they had Classic Hits on their website then changed it....
If they are playing songs like from the Carpenters, Carly Simon, 5th dimension, etc. This is great...I might have been too hard on them...I was watching some of their video promos and it is hinted that more theme weekends, specials are coming very soon so this is a good station after all. I guess I'm not use to hearing so much late 70s & 80s music...I do hope more variety is played during that time period. >>

Good post. And yes, there was the 5th Dimension, too ... "Workin' On A Groovy Thing." Good that you noted the web site and you are correct.

They also pulled the GM's video that mentioned "Billboard's charts." Hmmm....

Don't remember who say what about "billboard charts" but maybe they just want to keep a low profile on that area for now...I just heard Joe Causi say he's be back on Saturday night. Does this mean he was in tonight as a special and that they still need to name someone for the evening slot ?
I heard Jeff Maezzi mention his overnight show will be robot tracking as he needs to be at the station during the day time. I would have hoped they put on a live DJ who could take requests, etc. Instead of voice tracking. Maybe this will change as the new sound develops

The WABC legacy has just been betrayed

Proves what I figured all along: CBS-FM is based on national charts. Why play something that was not big nationally but was Top 5 on WABC?

(Notable examples: "Fernando" by ABBA, "For the Love of Him" by Bobbi Martin, "Hot Pants" by James Brown, "Native New Yorker" by Odyssey, "Whodunit" by Tavares).

Rick Sklar is groaning in the great beyond and Glenn Morgan is glad he's no longer a PD/OM.

BTW, if CBS-FM is gonna rely on Billboard they should pick up Casey Kasem and "American Top 40". The pre-ABC version is back in syndication AFAIK.

I guess that the new CBS-FM sounded a lot better now in NYC. They played some "Classic Hits" from the 60's through the 80's, just like the way it sounded on WBPM. WBPM's "Classic Hits 92.9" had been on that format since February where it flipped from oldies (except a pocketful of pre-64 music) known as "Cool 92.9" back in the beginning of February. That was in the Hudson Valley listening area. And now, 5 months later, CBS-FM is back again in New York City once again to do the same format. They did a great job yesterday since it got rid of that awful "Jack" format. Now "Jack" is on HD-2 if you want to get HD Radio, get it at Best Buy.

The sister station here in Tampa WRBQ Q 105 moniker is GREATEST HITS of Tampa Bay!!! 8)
