The January 29, 2000, issue of TV Guide had a rather lengthy
obituary of Moore, who had died December 28, 1999. It said
that in 1979 the owners of the Lone Ranger character (and I
believe you're right, it's Wrather Corporation), planning the movie,
got a court order forbidding Moore to wear the mask in public and
to claim to be the Lone Ranger. After an unsuccessful battle, Moore
gave in and donned the sunglasses. But in 1984 he got the ruling
overturned and his mask back.
