Clear Channel laments lack of staff to fire at Christmas

Clear Channel's much-anticipated annual Christmas firings ritual is on the ropes this Yule season as CC management laments the lack of staff members to fire. In San Diego, it was a lonely firing for newsman Phil Farrar, who - in years past - could have shared this ritual with several other newly-terminated colleagues.

Clear Channel officials have responded by announcing a Spring hiring spree so they can be sure there is someone available for the 2012 Christmas layoffs. A senior CC official in San Antonio said, "This has become such a big part of our holiday celebration and if we could not keep it going for at least another year, well it just wouldn't be Christmas here in San Antone."

Well if it were the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring because of layoffs....But wait no that's every day of the year! Oh well watch it will come down to the 3 engineers running the place and a few sales people and the rest will be shown the door!

After the "golden season" of Christmas the fine folks at CC probably will get around to downsizing those 3 to one and make that one guy handle it all. LOL! (kidding, sorta)

I'm in another market but it always amazes me how much work and time is involved in pre-recording for Christmas etc. compared to having live bodies-and no dated 'best of' shows for talk radio.

As long as I have been in radio... and that goes back to before even the most basic automation... stations with considerate management have tried to make certain holidays as pre-prepared as possible.

The reason is that most of us want to give our staff members the chance to be with family on certain dates. Often there is a trade off... the more party-oriented will get New Years off, while the family-centered will get Christmas.

It does not matter whether the format is talk or music... unless it is all news, most formats can definitely give some time off to the staff. And in most cases, it's not to save money... it is to be nice.

Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas! :)
