Clear channel pulls 294 out of 340 HD2 "format lab" stations off the air?

I think this just means the availability of HD2 channels has been cut drastically, don't think it has anything to do with the actually numbers of stations broadcasting IBOC.

Exactly. Even the King, nay sayer admits the announcement means nothing. Rejoice, oh Pointy headed ones. Your POTENTIAL choices have been limited. I know YOU don't care, but your neighbors are being restricted. Meanwhile your "Better choices" mantra is trampled underfoot. You DID trash HD, though...

How happy you must be.

Do us all a favor and buy a Roku and go away.

My Dear Inspector,

The problem, as I see it, is the public is taking your advice. As a streamer and OTA broadcaster, I've had several recent emails from folks who say they "just got an Internet radio." Our streaming stats, although not awesome are 2-3 times the on line listeners we had at this time last year. I can't ignore the trend. More and more people are listening on line. If it continues over the next ten years, it will be significant, and probably profitable. It's hard not to notice...

This has nothing to do with radio. Clear eliminated many of the web streams on the Format Factory website, because they got few hits and limited listening time. All the formats there were developed and put on the web to see if any had traction... of course, very few did. So they got rid of the underperforming ones, and kept the ones they want to develop in the future.

None of this impacts any on-the-air radio station, just web streams.

So the HD2 formats come from these that are judged to be successful enough? Are these just composites or do these actually become HD2 channels?

Re: Clear channel pulls 294 out of 340 HD2 "format lab" stations off the air?

Just what HD radio needs at this point - limit the diversity of choices available. I am more and more convinced - the ONLY compelling feature of HD radio is HD-2. And if you limit it to more of the same tired old stuff, nobody will even care about HD-2. Great way to shoot HD radio down before it even has a chance, Clear Channel!

Re: Clear channel pulls 294 out of 340 HD2 "format lab" stations off the air?

I wish they'd pull all the "format lab" channels, and actually let individual programmers in individual markets do what good programmers do best...FIND AN AUDIENCE! "Format Lab" channels are like the old joke about the camel..."it's a horse designed by committee".

Re: Clear channel pulls 294 out of 340 HD2 "format lab" stations off the air?

This might be a stupid question, but don't the individual stations get the chance to dicide what to carry on the extra channels? If this is true, then why buy an HD radio?

INTERESTING, considering the “high school student” streaming from his bedroom may have received more “hits” for his “hobby” than did the CCU Format Lab offering! This is yet A CONTINUED example of how corporate radio IS FAILING to connect with the emerging youth generation – the first time we have witnessed such in nearly FIFTY YEARS! ...And obviously, the reason their aggregate asset value has DECREASED BY OVER FIFTY-PERCENT in the last year!

The format lab is a way of finding different music mixes and syles and combinations that might be used on HD 2 channels. Clear is the only company that went to the extent of encouraging in-house programmers to come up with such ideas and created a platform to present them to see if they got any attention. So what do you do? You criticize them for taking the effort to come up with over 300 different ideas and to stream them all. Yet if they had done nothing and just done pre-existing format ideas, you would not have criticized them. Shame on you.

Re: Clear channel pulls 294 out of 340 HD2 "format lab" stations off the air?

If I'm not mistaken, they are ONLY allowed to choose a format from THE LIST, and you can't program the HD2 station yourself - which is what's already wrong with radio - not having individual 'local' flavor!
I say let the MD/PD progam their own goodies on the HD2's and HD3's.

Re: Clear channel pulls 294 out of 340 HD2 "format lab" stations off the air?

I can't talk about CC stations but I do know many HD stations not owned by CC are programing their HD 2 & 3 channels locally, at least in NYC.

Completely wrong. I criticized them for pulling most of the ideas off their site before they had a chance to garner a following. And it precisely the pre-existing formats that will sink HD, because HD-2 is the ONLY thing going for HD radio at this point.
