Read the original post again. It's one show on the station, not a complete format change.

Right station in the right market for such a move, IMO.

Re:Gay/Lesbian Specialty Programming

So, besides LIVE 105's KGAY Weekend during Gay Pride Weekend, this looks like it's going to be the FIRST gay specialty show since LIVE 105's "Hibernia Beach" left the air in 1999...

What about Karel on KGO?

He's gay and talks about gay issues.

“Its about time,” CC regional VP/market manager Kim Bryant said in statement. “San Francisco has a long history as ground zero for the gay community and as the Bay Area’s only liberal talk radio station, the Quake is the perfect platform for this program.”

How can the quake be the bay area's only liberal talk radio station? What about KGO?

And it looks like it's going to be a weekend show, or sundays only. Once again, CC going into it half-assed, just like they did with KNEW.

I love it how b/w 2 talk stations (KQKE and KNEW) there is an entire 3 hours of local programming. NICE!

KGO doesn't market itself as "liberal". KQKE does.

KGO reminds me more of the news/talk stations of the 1970s and 1980s, with some interjection of viewpoints but more of an effort to achieve balance and fairness than what we see now from most talk stations.

The CC manager you quoted seemed to imply that "gay = liberal". I guess he hasn't heard of Andrew Sullivan, Arthur Finkelstein (the Roy Cohn of the new millenium), or the Log Cabin Republicans.

The notion of gay programming as a format is almost always bound to fail. There is no such thing as a "gay community" -- there are gay communit*ies* that are just as diverse in viewpoints and interests as anything among straight people.

For their business model, they really don't need it. The ideological programming could come from anywhere. Heck, if Albania were still stalinist and Radio Tirana were broadcasting diatribes, it might serve either station as well! The point isn't to inform or entertain, the point is to throw red meat to the base.

By "their business model" do you mean

having the 2 lowest rated talk stations in SF bay? Oh ok, then they're fulfilling their business model of tons of syndicated shows and terrible ratings quite nicely.

Here's hoping it's better than "Hibernia Beach" (I was never a big Ken McPherson fan). BTW, besides Karel, KFOG's Dave Morey is openly gay (meaning "out" on the air) and has been for well over a decade.

And of course Michael Savage and Allen Ginsburg used to be really, er, close. LOL!

Too bad KGO can't void Wattenburg's contract & put Q in that spot.
