ClearChannel launches new Gay/Lesbian format in Dallas/Ft Worth

ClearChannel has launched the new PRIDE network in the 6th largest gay/lesbian market in the U.S.
Dallas/Ft Worth now has a station serving the GLBT community.(Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, Trans-sexual)
I mentioned this format several months ago on this board. How long do you think it will be until Atlanta has an affiliate?
Could THIS ne the new format for WGST?

Didn't this format (or actually a precursor I guess) first appear a few years ago in New Orleans?

How will this affect Q100?

I cant believe this is the first time that old saw has been used.....and it is relevant! :D

This is the dumbest thing I ever heard. Exactly what kind of music is preferred by a gay person ? Are they going to play 'Gay Bar' by Electric 6 five hundred times a day ? Sexuality and musical taste are not related.

I would guess that aside from the stereo typical club beats the station will be very talk heavy (be it news or entertainment) - think VH1 or E! on the radio. If that's not the case, then you're right this will be nothing but stereotypes pouring from your speakers.

The music is dance oriented. CC's Premiere now distributes the gay-oriented
Radio with A Twist, which is heard in Atlanta on Q100.5. Plus one of the personalities on the show is based in Atlanta. The Pride programming has been slowly introduced on some of CC's HD-2 FM stations. It is also streamed.
action central

This format will fail. Gay people come from every walk of life and prefer all types of music. (No, I am not gay, but I KNOW sexuality and musical taste are not related). If they get any ratings it will be because they have some flagrantly gayish DJ and some people will want to gawk at that.

I don't see how this has any viable future. First of all, gays and lesbians listen to different styles and genres of music. There is no music that defines our taste as a community unlike African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, etc. The mainstream media associates us with contemporary dance, techno, disco, and party music. However, that music was adopted by the community as a outlet for free expression and social activities. Most people (myself included) who may enjoy dance music in clubs, do not want to hear it 24/7 as it gets really repetitive and old. I enjoy alternative, classic rock, classical, while many of my friends enjoy hip hop, AAA, and country. There is no pattern between us! Sirius has a gay channel and it is not one of their popular channels.

This channel might gain listeners at first because of targeting the gay community and their buying power. After the novelty wears off, expect a new format to take its place.

Personally, I would like to see this debut on one of the HD2 feeds because it will offer us something different. But, please do not flip WGST! I hope that was a joke from the original poster

Having discovered just how much money there is in them thar hills, Clear Channel will not launch the format wherever and whenever they can. Part of their devotion to diversity, don't cha know

I disagree.

The 'gay format' does not need ratings,or deep playlists, it needs advertisers. I would wager a good handful of successful Midtown businesses would jump at the chance to advertise with a 'gay oriented' station.

You think Burkharts and Outwrite wouldnt pay to air ads on that station? If so, you are nuts.

The Bull management team is already in place. Have them sell the spots! ;)

it *COULD* succeed if they DO IT RIGHT.

Of course, gay people don't like one specific kind of music.. but if they play a good variety of music, talk about the issues we care about, that matter... it could stand a chance of making a decent amount of money.

Even if they don't get very good ratings, if they're making money.. that's what counts.

Yes, Burkharts, Outwrite, Blake's, and a handfull of other businesses like Target, may advertise on it. But I honestly can't see it succeeding and gaining advertisers long term (after the novelty wears off). As I said, it would be a great HD2 format. The advantage of HD Radio is that it can provide niche stations that may not be mainstream enough for a full powerhouse station.

Something else to consider is that Atlanta is missing more mainstream, less risky formats from the radio dial such as oldies, classic country, southern gospel, soft AC, standards, Jack FM, etc. It's hard to believe that a gay format would be more successful than these in Georgia. We have had stations that have attempted to be creative and venture outside of their formats, such as 97.1 Jamz, Mix 105.7, 105.3 The Max, and 92.9 Dave FM. The stations that have consistently held up in ratings are V-103, Star 94, Kicks 101.5, 97.1 The River, B 98.5. These stations offer what the typical Atlanta wants: tight playlists and canned formats that are predictible and familiar.
[EDIT] As an investor, I would consider this very risky.

As an HD2 station, it may gain some fanfare and help raise awareness for the HD technology as well. [EDIT] definitely love new electronic toys andhave the money to waste.

[EDIT-objectionable content]

A gay format? Ask yourself how you would program to straight people and you can see how this is a little strange. The gay people I know are as diverse as the straight people I know. Maybe a magazine-format show that addresses the gay community. But a whole format, I don't know how you do that.

I’m no apologist for that science-fair project known as “HD Radio”, but last summer I had a brief epiphany... I had just flown into Chicago and was met by a college-era friend who has spent his entire professional career in radio there. As he turned the ignition key, the car exploded with Len’s “Steal My Sunshine”. Briefly noticing “103.5” on the JVC HD Radio display, I remarked: “I see you haven’t changed your presets since Dick Bartley and WFYR left town.” Then came the liner: “You know it’s a great day when your radio turns GAY... Top to bottom—we’ve got it covered! Pride FM HD-2.” OMG, I thought—what are the Malaise-Boyz up to now?

Honestly, the format was excellently presented. Musically, “Pride” sounds like CHR—well on its way to saving itself. It’s EVERYWHERE in the Loop and near-north side! In market #3, it’s nearly the sum of ALL “HD Radio buzz”. Most interesting, is the horde of “straight” women AND men who actually shell out the bucks for HD to listen... This goes well-beyond the old paradigm that “white folks actually listen to black radio”. “Pride” is one of the better HD examples trumpeting a “station between the stations” despite a signal that... well... I’ll avoid the operative term for obvious reasons.

Recently, the “Radio Racket’s” George Brusstar announced his “AM-radio HD solution”... Well I’m advancing my own for FM HD... Put “Pride FM” (or something REALLY “adventurous”) on an HD subcarrier in any decent-sized market... Rush Limbaugh’s home town included  :D I can hear the new liner now: “Jack it up—and pi** Pat Robertson off!”

Keep in mind, Kiss in Dallas is the station that "launched" PRIDE radio in the 6th largest market in the US.....on their HD-2 sideband. Although several other mainstream CHRs have had this as their HD-2 subchannel for a while now (Kiss in Chicago is one example). It is not and there is not a market for this to be a primary format for any market of any size.
