Clippers Broadcast may go commercial-free Tuesday....and beyond!

The trial to determine if Shelly Sterling has the right to sell the Clippers is expected to conclude on July 28. Yesterday, Clippers interim CEO Dick Parsons took the stand and predicted a "death spiral" if Donald Sterling is allowed to retain ownership of the team. Parsons said that coach Doc Rivers would resign, some of the players could quit, most of the sponsors would withdraw, and a lot of the season ticket holders would cancel. He also said that nobody would ever offer as much for the team as the $2 billion that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is offering. Gee...ya think?

Yeah, but will Shirley be able to take him to Clippers games? :)

Judge Rules Against Donald Sterling, Clearing Way for Clippers Sale
Maria Elena Fernandez, NBC News, July 28 2014

A judge ruled Monday that Donald Sterling's estranged wife didn't defraud him when she struck a deal to sell the Los Angeles Clippers to former Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer, saying she was within her rights to seek a mental evaluation that allowed the $2 billion sale to go forward. "I just tried to do the best thing for our family and for everybody else," an elated Shelly Sterling told NBC News outside the courthouse. "It's been very tough. Donald and I do have love for each other and I hope it will all work out between us and everything will be good."

Shelly Sterling, who has been married to Donald for nearly 58 years, said she thinks her husband "will be happy," even though the judge gave her a sweeping victory, including taking the unusual step of ordering that the sale be allowed to be completed regardless of an appellate court’s intervention. Although the judge issued a tentative oral order on Monday, all parties expect him to confirm it in writing by August 13. "We are pleased that the court has affirmed Shelly Sterling's right to sell the Los Angeles Clippers to Steve Ballmer," the NBA said in a statement. "We look forward to the transaction closing as soon as possible."

I said Shirley. I don't know why. But surely you knew who I meant.

Donald Sterling, as expected, is appealing the decision and he has two lawsuits going, with a third one on the way, but the judge invoked a provision in California's trust law, 1210(b), which will allow Shelly Sterling to proceed with the sale of the Clippers "as if no appeal were pending." I ain't gonna believe anything until I see Steve Ballmer sign the purchase agreement.

The Donald Sterling saga continues. TMZ has obtained a copy of a lawsuit filed by V. Stiviano in response to Shelly Sterling's demands that Stiviano return the cars and cash that Donald had given to her. Stiviano says that the gifts were payment for acting as a "beard" or companion and Shelly knew all about it. Stiviano says she never had sex with Donald. She believes he is homosexual. Ooh-wee!

The Sterling saga continues. On March 7, Shelly Sterling filed a lawsuit against V. Stiviano, Donald Sterling's lover, seeking the return of all cash, cars, real estate and other gifts that can be considered community property. Shelly describes Stiviano as a woman who has used several fictitious names and "engages in conduct designed to target, befriend and seduce and then receives as gifts transfers of wealth from older men whom she targets for such purposes." The trial date has finally been set: March 9, 2015, more than a year after the lawsuit was filed. Getting justice in Los Angeles County takes a long time.

Sadly, that is true. Anyone who trips and falls, or spills hot food on himself, or has a traffic accident, or gets hurt while at work, or gets called a racial epithet...his first two thoughts are "Who can I sue?" and "How much money can I get?"

In the Sterling saga, V. Stiviano filed a countersuit against Shelly Sterling, accusing her of defamation. Shelly supposedly called her a "thief" on national tv. Stiviano can't produce any evidence, however, and her suit may be thrown out. Shelly wants her to return a $1.8 million duplex, a Ferrari, two Bentleys and a Range Rover worth more than $500,000. Stiviano may not be a thief but she still made a pretty good haul!

Well, the Clippers have their first new sponsor since the Sterling fiasco was resolved. American Airlines is now the team's "official airline." Their logo will be displayed at Staples Center during Clippers home games and will be featured in tv and print advertising. American will also sponsor Prime Ticket's Clippers Weekly program. And when fans enter contests and win tickets to see a Clippers game, guess which airline they'll fly on!

A Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge will soon decide if Shelly Sterling will recoup the $2.8 million in cash and gifts that Donald Sterling gave to V. Stiviano. Donald still insists there was no sexual relationship with Stiviano. He says they are "just friends." Yeah, okay. Shelly says Donald used shared assets to pay for the gifts and she never gave her consent. Today's Los Angeles Times lists some of the gifts:

$1.8 million - Spanish-style duplex
$1.2 million - Cash
$400,000 - Ferrari, Range Rover, two Bentleys
$5333 - Cartier bracelet
$391 - Easter bunny costume
$354 - Birthday cake
$12 - Lacy thong
$1 - Donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as part of a purchase at a CVS store

I was on Shelly's side until I got to that last item. One dollar, Shelly? A dollar that went to St. Jude? And you want it back? Wow.

KFWB and the Clippers have extended their broadcast rights agreement so KFWB will continue to be the home of Clippers basketball. Announcers Brian Sieman, Ralph Lawler and Michael Smith will return next season and KFWB's George Wrighster and Brett Winterble will host "Clippers Hardcore" before every game.

Clippers basketball is carried on KFWB, a radio station. The Clippers won their final regular-season game last night and, depending on the outcome of tonight's Spurs-Pelicans game, will be either the #2 or #3 seeded team in the Western Conference playoffs, which will also be broadcast on radio. The ongoing battles between Donald and Shelly and Stiviano are an unwanted distraction for the Clippers, whose games are broadcast on radio. I admit that those battles are not directly related to radio...but Clippers fans (who listen to games on the radio) would love to see everything settled. This thread is relevant to them, if not to the radio industry in general.

Seriously Steve? Do you really believe the players are thinking about this? Maybe they should also worry about the crappy nighttime signal of the station... After all most of their playoff games will be at night. So many fans out of decent range around 20 miles will be SOL if they do not watch it on TV.

Actually, I believe the Clippers are thinking about having to face the defending champion San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the playoffs. The Clippers are likely also thinking that they probably won't make it to the second round. *Sigh*
