Clyde Clifford’s Beaker Street CANCELLED on The Point 94.1

Rich Moellers said:
I might be willing to go half-sies with the Searcy station and pick it up on my 99.3 in Russellville. I've had several inquiries from listeners asking if we could pick up the show. Maybe there's a possibility for a "network" of sorts for the show. My station is called "Oldies," but it's really a Classic Hits/Classic Rock hybrid.

Great move, Rich. Beaker Street would be a perfect fit on 99.3. I wonder if there's any possible way we could get it on 99.5 in Little Rock (?) I know they're a Radio Disney affiliate, but aren't the kids mostly gone by 7PM on a Sunday night? (Not that kids wouldn't enjoy listening to Beaker Street. I started when I was 6 with The Mighty 10-90 at night in Minnesota.)

I thought that, but I didn't want to put the same of the hospital on here. I am actually working there myself(as a temporary). It would be cool to run into him.

Still no word on a new home yet for Beaker Street, but he's got some prospects. I'll just leave it at that. I went up and joined Clyde Clifford Sunday night at The Point to record an interview with him for a story for KUAR, which we aired this morning. I also spoke the following day with General Manager Randy Bush who acknowledged the history of the show, but again defended it as a business decision. You can hear my report and see a four minute video clip I put together, which shows one break and some of the interview.

Also, if you'd like to hear the whole 18 minute interview recorded as he did the program, you can download it as an mp3:

It was something to spend time with someone I had heard so many times and heard so much about. Hope those interested enjoy it.

Very doubtful at best. Radio Disney stations are pretty much 24/7 and no local-ism. I still think the best way for Beaker Street to remain viable is to go the Public Radio/non-comm relm. Perhaps KUAR (or even KABF) would be willing to provide a timeslot provided there is underwriting potential.

Michael -

Great interview and story. Hopefully, this will help to keep Beaker Street on the air.

Our playlist on 99.3 is partly inspired by Beaker Street. Several songs we play on 99.3 are regional hits that perhaps bubbled under but got significant airplay on LR radio and on shows like Beaker Street.

KAAY in general introduced the hits of "the South" to other parts of the country where they weren't being played. One that sticks out was the Addrisi Brothers "We've Got to Get it On Again" from 1972. I grew up in Minneapolis where it received no airplay, even though it made the Top 40. KAAY played it pretty heavily for awhile which was how I found out about it.

I have a feeling some of the "traditional" Beaker Street songs will be rolled out, much like the final KAAY broadcast in 1985.

That said, I'm going to "aircheck" the entire show for later listening since I will be at a Super Bowl party. Granted much of the music isn't and never was my thing (generational, and a preference for post punk/80's college-indie music than 60's-early 70's prog rock).

I hope folks do tune in after the Super Bowl and give Clyde a nice send off. Thanks for what he has contributed to the history of Arkansas radio.

You were right - a lot of Beaker Street classics got played last night. It was a great show overall.

BUD50, Thanks for posting that link!! Stuff like that is why I joined this site. Beaker Street is already greatly missed by yours truly. I hope to see it make a comeback, but I guess that's up to Clyde and another radio station to decide.

Doe not sound encouraging at this point. :(

A friend of the Mighty 1090 blog contacted Clyde...he said that it was kind of nice spending Sunday nights with the family. Maybe he'll get rested up and get back on the air...nothing in Little Rock is shaking, however and the stations offering are 'way too far away, travel-wise, to be attractive....
