CMT To Air Miss America Pageant--No Kidding

Now this is the most improper channel to put a Miss America Pageant. On CMT!! Now I have heard it all. You would have thought Lifetime would have gotten it.

Here is their website for the shocking news!!! LOL!!!

www.CMT.com

Here Is The CMT Press Release.

And Here Is The Press Release From The Miss America Organization.

Interesting enough (probably because the TV deal was signed so late), the next pageant won't be until January, 2006. Traditionally, the pageant is held in mid-September.

I wonder if the January date might be a "one-year thing" for 2006 (owing to the late date the TV deal was signed), and that the pageant might go back to it's traditional mid-September date later in 2006 (meaning that, among other things, Miss America 2006 would hold the title for only a little more than eight months).

The original purpose of the pageant was to extend Atlantic City's tourist season (it was a Summer resort in those pre-casino days) a week or two past Labor Day. But with all the casinos there nowadays, a mid-September date is no longer as critical to the pageant (and to Atlantic City) as it once was.

It's not a surprise that the Miss America Pageant was picked-up by a cable network. What stunned me (and probably everyone else) was that CMT got it. I thought maybe Lifetime or the USA Network would grab it.

Does this mean that Tim McGraw will sing "There She Is, Miss America" at the conclusion of the next pageant??

First off, let's answer the last question first. Tim McGraw doesn't have the voice for singing "There She Is, Miss America". Let Wayne Newton or Clay Aiken or Barry Manilow sing it.

Now back to the Miss America Pageant itself. It is so out of place on CMT then again everything that Viacom has ever touched has gone out of place. Since CBS is owned by Viacom as well, why wasn't CBS in on the action?? Has the Miss America Pageant ever been shown on CBS?? I know it has shown on NBC and ABC,but don't know whether it has been on CBS before or not. If it has,it was before I was born. I wonder why Lifetime didn't pick the Miss America Pageant since it is Television For Women. Oh well, guess the next thing CMT will pick up will be The Daytona 500 since they show specials on NASCAR on CMT as well.

To answer Braves 2005's question:

Although ABC had the first network telecast of a Miss America Pegeant in 1954, CBS did show the Miss America Pageant for a time in the 1960's and 1970's. NBC also aired the pageant briefly in the late 1960's, and for much of the 1970's, 1980's, and into the 1990's before it returned to ABC.

Assuming that the final night of the pageant were held any night but Saturday (or possibly Friday), a case could be made, especially if the pageant is reformatted, to have preliminary competitions on a Viacom-owned cable network with the final night on CBS.

I'd prefer the final night of the competition (the pageant itself) be held on a Sunday between 7 and 9 P.M. Eastern time (and possibly tape-delayed on the West Coast to 7-9 P.M. Pacific time). Not only would it get a much larger TV audience being on a Sunday, but it would be on early enough in the evening that little girls would be able to watch. And they might decide "Mommy and Daddy, when I grow up, I want to be Miss America!". That could translate into more interest which in turn would lead to more viewers.

Assuming, of course, that Viacom and CBS are still together in January 2006 -- remember that Viacom and CBS split up recently.

I heard about the news through a Zap2It article (link below), which indicates that part of the deal allows another Viacom-owned cable network to join in the fun... yes, that's right, VH1! They'll probably air something like "The 100 Wildest Miss America Moments" as part of the hype. Or even "Best Pageant Ever," where a "panel of experts" (i.e., commedians who seem to get exposure only through VH1) make the usual jokes and critiques on everything from Miss Wisconsin's talent performance to Miss Idaho's choice of heels. Heck, I'd bet everything I own on pop-culture-happy VH1 airing both.

That's news to me. When did this turn of events occur with the split up between Viacom and CBS?? I also read something in the press release about VH1(owned by Viacom) carrying shows associated with The Miss America Pageant like pre-events,etc. CMT is not Country Music Television anymore as you can tell as it has little or nothing to do with country music now.

Stick this on UPN. Stuff like this belongs on UPN. :p

Out of place?!?

The most passionate fans of Beauty Pagents are in the *South*. Like Canadians and hockey, Southerners seem to be the only ones that really give a rip about this sort of thing. Although, I'm suprised about CMT picking up the pagent. My prediction would have been a more mainstream cable channel like TNT or TBS, or maybe Lifetime.

Pax would have been a natural for "broadcast" tv but being on a cable channel gives it greater credibity and viewership. I predict one of the networks will return it next year (although UPN won't be given its demographics).

So would putting the Super Bowl on ESPN (or Disney Channel) give IT greater credibility and viewership?

It's news to me too. I hate being scooped.

One Very Unhappy Camper About Viacom And Miss America And It Being On CMT

I see other Viacom stations going in on the action before it is all said and done. MTV will also have its own take on the Miss America Pageant. TV Land will show episodes pertaining to beauty pageants(Happy Days where Richie,Potsie and Ralph stage and rig a beauty pageant,Sanford and Son where Aunt Esther is in a beauty pageant). Nick at Nite is possibly a non-factor in this since I don't know any episodes from the 90's that have beauty pageants.

I am very unhappy about CMT the past 2 or 3 years since they dropped The Grand Ole Opry and they started showing movies that don't pertain to country music whatsoever. Since when is All The Right Moves belong on a country station?? And Lifetime,WE!,or Oxygen should have been better choices for the Miss America Pageant than CMT.

June 14 was the date used on the byline of this Reuters article:

Re: Miss America on Viacom

Well, with VH1 getting in on it, maybe sister network MTV could have a special "Pimp My Ride" where the boys at West Coast Customs remake one of the finalists' wheels?
______________

PAX is a 3rd tier cable channel in "Broadcast" drag....nuff said.

Re: CMT on Digital Cable?

When I had cable CMT was on the "gold" tier of digital cable. I wonder how many other places it is out of reach even to cable people?
______________

I maintain that CMT is a good fit for the pageant. Down South, espoecially, they take that pageant stuff as deadly serious business. That is your ticket out of the trailer park. In more sophisticated markets that stuff really just doesn't fly.
How about if a CMT-pageant were to, say, scrap the evening gowns and go with
"daisy Duke" short shorts instead? Yee-hah!

I don't think that pageants in particular don't do well in either south, north, east or west. The last Miss America Pageant only drew a 9.8 rating on ABC last year. Cable network ratings are very different than network ratings.

What did(emphasize did) CMT stand for in the first place? Country Music Television. Who ruined that distinction? Viacom and that they started showing reality shows,NASCAR shows, hosts like Roseanne who don't have nothing to do with country music, movies that don't have a country music theme except for Pure Country with George Strait, and yet they think movies like All The Right Moves are country movies. Like I have said on previous posts,Viacom has ruined everything they touched.

I wish that CMT would show reruns of country music shows like Hee Haw,The Porter Wagoner Show,Dolly's variety show from the 70's and also the 1987-1988 show she did on ABC. They did show reruns of Glen Campbell's Goodtime Hour in
2002 and 2003,the very last time I watched CMT entirely. Now CMT is one big joke.
