I'm no Alt expert, but I know that "I Swear" would be out of place on Alt radio, either the All-4-One pop hit or the John Michael Montgomery country No. 1. Of course, if remade by BTS (feat. The Weeknd and Coldplay), it might have a chance. Are we going to rename this thread to "out of place songs on Alternative"? We should, I swear.
Because they would rather play Justin Bieber, that abcdefu song, or flog Juice WRLD’s corpse for the umpteenth time?"Wake Me Up" Foals baffles me when I hear it on Alternative. Not because it's funky ear candy power pop (those songs will happen in Alternative), but why CHR hasn't absolutely pounced on this song.
Honestly Alt artists should be seriously looking at CHR crossover right now. The format is quite simply lacking songs
Interestingly, two country artists, Jelly Roll and Giovannie & The Hired Guns, repackaged themselves as Alternative/Rock artists because country wasn’t giving them support, and they’re both seeing some success on rock radio right now. I’m not really aware of anyone trying the opposite tactic other than Counting Crows, who saw quite a bit of AAA airplay with their recent album cycle. As I've said, some alternative artists are looking at anything because they're not getting support or traction in the alternative format. Some have even repackaged themselves as country artists if they're from the south. At least in CHR, they can expect some label support and some synergy with other artists for tours. In alternative, you're a lone wolf among other lone wolves.
I just heard Arlie “Crashing Down” on ALT Nation, and it could pass for a song by Harry Styles. If it was by Harry Styles it would be a number one song on the pop charts. Since it’s by someone who is not a pop star it probably won’t ever get any plays on CHR, and Alternative stations are too busy playing 25 year old Sublime records to find a spot for it on the playlist.Interestingly, two country artists, Jelly Roll and Giovannie & The Hired Guns, repackaged themselves as Alternative/Rock artists because country wasn’t giving them support, and they’re both seeing some success on rock radio right now. EDIT: I think it’s become obvious that Alternative is in the midst of another shift; which tends to happen to the format at the start of every decade. Indie/alternative pop seems to be on the way out, while post-punk and hard rock seem to be coming back, and indie is shifting back towards the rock direction. The pop that remains is synthpop, which is rock-adjacent. So yeah a lot of artists are getting left out in the cold, much like happened to alternative metal and hard rock artists in the early 2010’s, or new wave artists not named The Cure or Depeche Mode in the early 1990’s
