"Real Country" failed big time in sacramento, but here in the bay area I think it would be cool to see a real country type format, kinda brings back good memories of the ol' young country 93.3, I hope they bring back JD (jeff dean), country seems to be HIS home turf and afternoons are what he does best!!! any guesses as to when they will flip the switch???

> > And this is why? Because Infinity wants 99.7's ratings to drop one full point? As I remember, Country hasn't done well in San Francisco since the 80s and the "urban cowboy" craze. Infinity's "Young Country" flopped at 93.3. Is "Real" Country that much different?

Here's my two cents worth.

Doug Harville will bring in his C&W PD from top-rated KNCI to deliver Country, the right way. That coupled with the power of 99.7 will do the trick. Those ill-fated attempts at C&W were done with decrepit Class A facilities (the stations current know as MAX comes to mind), and weak on-air talent. CBS-Infinity will bring in Talent--some hitters!

My question is, where does Infinity do country? I believe they have a successful one in Chicago, but I believe that is it for them in major markets in the country.

The consultant they hired is better known for 70s & 80s oldies, not for country.

This sounds like a scattershot prediction? Or do you actually have info?

Hardly..Infinity is the biggest large market country operator and pretty successful

Chicago WUSN is #6
Houston KILT is #7
Detroit WYCD is #5
Seattle KMPS is #1
Phoenix KMLE is #6
Tampa WQYK is #4
Pitts. WDSY is #2
PortlandKUPL is #2
SacrmntoKNCI is #2
Cinnc. WUBE is #2
RivrsideKFRG is #3
KC KFKF&KBEQ are #6 & #8
ChrlotteWSOC is #2

Not being a country music fan - I can't speak to the music mix of the Bear - but I would listen from time to time for variety sake. I thought the formatting was clever and the DJs were decent to good. JD was a well known name in the Bay Area - on both Country stations and KFRC. All in all, I thought the Bear was a pretty good radio station. I really think country doesn't do well in the Bay Area because there are just not enough country music fans here.

Cobain is spinning in his grave, wondering why he every married Courtney...:)

Anywa, The Bear WAS succeeding...Their LAST bood had a 2.1 12+ rating... I imagine the demo breakdowns were even better. Bonneville just tried
to get to the Jack format before Infinity...Bad call.

Doug also likes making money. Lots of it. Big revenue and Country radio usually don't meet in San Francisco -- so I wouldn't count on this one coming true.

Yep. Nice try, Allison. Subtract a few points from your cred.<P ID="signature">______________

I thought Doug 'loved country', what happened?

> I guess PDs often get reputations for being experts on a particular format, so all the armchair "predictors" assume that this is all these guys care about. But I assume that successful PDs don't become successful by programming just one format, or only the music they personally like - they actually try to program a station based on what the market needs, and what will improve ratings, or bring them a more profitable demographic. Neither Jack or Country was going to do that for 99.7

The first lesson my mama ever taught me was never trust anything anybody from a radio station tells you.

Or was it anybody in government? It might have been government.

> My Bad, Sorry!

That's okay. Go run ten laps and you're forgiven.
