Commercial Free Mondays on KVGS 107.9 the alternative

Good idea or an act of desperation?

I like the idea of Commercial Free Mondays as a differentiator but that's about all I like.

It's too gimicky in my opinion.. why not stick to what made radio great in the past.. good music and compelling content?

OFFICIAL LAS VEGAS RADIO TRANSLATION GUIDE..

Commerical Free Monday really means: Our sales staff is so bad we couldn't sell any commercials anyway!
More Music In The Morning: Our morning show really sucks!
Twofer Tuesday: Our consultant approved list of boring music will be twice as bad today!
Thousand Dollar Thursday: We only had 4 grand in our promotion budget this year, so we'll blow in a month!
Concert Connection: We get most of the buys from promoters and the sales staff didn't need these tickets.
10 After Laughter: Our jocks are so bad, we use comedy bits instead.
The #1 -anything-: Our consultant found a daypart/demo where we somehow managed to have a listener.

HD, you are right. When you don't have the correct music and/or compelling reasons to listen, you resort to gimmcks. Gimmicks don't usually work for too long.

1. Just heard an ID that said "Transmitting live from the top of the Stratosphere, this is KVGS...". Huh? Come on... that's a flat out lie right? They're not transmitting from anywhere even close to the Las Vegas strip.

Correction... I guess they've added an additional transmitter on the Stratosphere. I didn't realize that. Does it make the signal better around Las Vegas?

2. I didn't realized they had re-imaged themselves from "Area" to "The Alternative". Nice try. Good luck guys.

I've always loved this station but it just doesn't seem to be working.

hahahaha funny stuff and sadly true.
I have to say that for a station with a crappy signal and equally crappy content, they still manage some sales and some pretty decent promotions. What say you transfer some of that talent over to programming/talent?

It works well for AMP in L.A who is spots free on Mondays... But that is L.A and on a signal you can hear!

KVGS claims they improved their signal. Has anybody noticed any difference?

For what its worth, yes, they have apparently upgraded. They transmit from 2 locations. Signal is solid over Vegas, versus the old signal that came in from somewhere near Laughlin. A co-worker here works P/T for them.

Next time you're in your car (if you own one), press "scan" and note that it will stop on 107.9. Processing still sounds lousy, but overall, the station is vastly improved. They've picked up some sold jocks--I enjoy Dennis Huff and Gonzo at night.

As far as commercial free days go, I believe this is in response to PPM. They were first, so they should be commended for trying something different.

I don't know much about that operation, and from this message board, you all don't see much good from them, either. So what have they done to you, exactly?

It’s a poor product.

I agree that Gonzo and Huff are solid talent, but musically the station seems confused. I heard “The Fray”(over my head), which - along with the worn out 90s tilted catalog they spin- makes we wonder just exactly what they are an alternative to.

Rock finally seems to be headed in a direction where true alternative bands are emerging again, but you don’t find any on KVGS.

As far as the signal goes, it’s still full of static and static doesn’t belong on FM

They just moved their FM Booster up to the strat in the past month or so...its combined in with KOAS.....so KOAS and KVGS are using the same transmit antenna on the strat for their Boosters. This should work well on the strip; they might get interference from the main and booster interfering with one another in places more that 4 or 5 miles or so from the strat. I'm curious as to how they sound as I have an interest in FM Boosters. Booster interference is different that weak signal interference.....you'll get a solid stop on scan signal put the stereo light will flicker....also, you might here hetero dyne noise as I best describe as a dentist drill sound in the background! I know their consultant and I'm sure they are trying to sync the signals to minimize interference.

I can only get it my car and not a single radio in my house and i live 13 miles away and can see the Strat from my house.
Lots of static unless I'm driving directly toward the tower. I don't know where all the energy is going, but certainly not in my direction.

maybe the Cheerleaders of this turd could pass on this suggestion:

"Nirvina/Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters/Grunge Rock"-Free Mondays. Just heard Foo Fighters followed by a worn out(aren't they all?) Nirvana track. yawn
