(Concerning The Alabama Auctions) Just Spoke With Someone In The Know And...

From what they said Friday afternoon, Thomaston and Camden have no bids yet. Maplesville may have a winner. My contact is 99.9% sure of it. Stay tuned and I'll keep you posted.

Wouldn't surprise me if the one for Maplesville is being bid on by someone within the Reynolds family, just under a different company name (among the many ones they already use). Why anyone would want those allotments in areas with miniscule populations is beyond me...

I can promise you the Reynolds family won't be involved at all.

All will be revealed about the winner and their plans very soon.

Stay tuned and Have a nice day. :)

The auction bids are public, so no need to have a guy in the know :)

The provisional winning bid for Maplesville is WKLF 1000 in Clanton, with a bid of $76,000. There are no bids for Camden or Thomaston. However, the auction is not complete so things can change.

Now that you have revealed the winner, I can tell you what Mr. Chris Johnson's plans are.

The Super Hits Of The Past Live Here, On "The Peach" WKLF 106.3 FM Maplesville/Clanton. (Oldies/Classic Hits)

Have a nice day! :)

At first, I was also wondering who on earth could find value for a commercial station licensed to Maplesville, but I suppose if it can be moved a bit closer to I-65, the super hits format currently heard at night on WKLF's translator would be as good a thing as any for it.

Don't the Reynolds have business connections with Chris Johnson? Isn't he one of the partners to whom they sold 50% of WKLF? Also, weren't those two parties involved somehow in the sale/move of WAMI and the FM translator in Calera which never materialized? Sounds as though Reynolds may not have actually applied for the Maplesville allotment "on paper", but Reynolds might be operating the new station "behind the curtain". After all, the "Peach" intellectual property was (maybe still is) owned by Reynolds...

I believe they still do. However, Mr. Chris and WKLF LLC is more than likely going to own this new radio station, once the dust has settled. Have a nice day! :)

Dan .
Maybe. Given Reynolds' shenanigans in the past with other stations they've owned, I don't put much faith in that...

Let's set the record straight. Just spoke with my friend Mr. Chris Johnson and he confirmed the Reynolds family will have no involvement with this new radio station. It was his WKLF LLC brand that did the bidding and will more than likely get the station, when everything is finalized. That's the good word and have a nice day! :)

Zach, any idea how far the future 106.3 could be moved eastward towards I-65? Doesn't appear it could go too far north bc of having to meet minimum separation with WBPT at 106.9.

Back during the first incarnation of this allocation, I did some calculating with the spacing requirements and discovered that it's exceptionally limited in what it can do as far as moving while staying on the existing frequency.

WBPT restricts any movement north; WSTH restricts any movement to the east; WZNJ restricts any movement to the west; WBMH would quickly come into play if it could move south. So, the best I can see is moving about 6 miles south of the center of Maplesville, which would still put it in the middle of nowhere, broadcasting to no one.

Now, maybe there's some other frequency they could change to that would open up a path to somewhere else, but I am not sure what that would be… that's kinda beyond my limited abilities. I think that Shelby County is an impossibility at this point because of how crowded the Birmingham dial is these days. Clanton might be doable if it would replace The Peach frequency that went non-commercial. Maybe Selma could be in the mix, but that doesn't seem like a growth market for commercial broadcasting.

I seem to recall Dan saying he could hear the old station in Selma to some degree, and that it was not a good signal in Clanton. I just don't see it doing any better this time around, honestly.

The tower will have to stay in Maplesville, due to those issues you raised Mr. Zach.

And...In Selma we have no where else to build a new full powered station. The dial here is very well crowded due to the many local stations we have and the ones we get from elsewhere.

Sorry about that!
