Was vacationing down your way, and heard a station that, Lord help me, was one of the worst excuses for radio I've ever heard - on a 100kw flamethrower, no less!

WRHT - Thunder Country.

From the horrible, Mayberry-style all-talk morning show to the must-be-the-owners-kid "Mudflap" on right after, this station is totally bereft of anything compelling or even remotely resembling a professional, commercial radio station.

How is this possible?
 
You just advertised for the station. I will have to check it out. Sounds like they do local programs. That is what made radio great and what radio lacks today. I think the Howard Stern show is unprofessional but if it gets ratings and advertisers, so does it matter if it is unprofessional? I never understood how Howard talks to women who strip (and you can't see them on radio) then asks them the same questions. But Howard is a success. I loved radio there were plenty of mom and pop stations that sounded unique.
 
They have 4500-some likes on facebook, and given that you were only passing through, and listened enough to remember the hosts and cared enough to comment, they're most likely saying "WTFEver." And counting bank. No 'fense.
I think Mudflap used to be on 92.9 The Eagle, but you probably already knew that.
 
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind small town radio. It has in many cases more personality and "reason to listen" than a lot of the corporate monoliths. I was in that area for a week, and in fact I did keep coming back to the station because it was everything I've come to understand good radio isn't: the morning hosts talked endlessly about their multiple boats and how they spend so much time on them (not exactly relatable for a country listener, I don't think...). The Mudflap (a different one than on Eagle 92.9, as he is to the best of my knowledge still in SC on Eagle there, doing mornings) that is on this station wouldn't cut it as an overnight jock on most stations in markets much, much smaller than New Bern. Just my opinion, of course, but there is a distinct difference between small market or local radio (much of which I have an appreciation for) and bad radio. This was the latter.

Many, many people in eastern NC live/work/play on the water. It's a good bet that many of the station's listeners own at least one boat. In that market, talking about your boat(s) would be perfectly appropriate for a country audience.
