The Bird is now working at the big studio in the sky. I worked with him at his last gig and that's where I met CCENG, finest husband and engineer a radio girl could ask for ;)
No finer post hath been written in 2007. Maybe that Woo girl is really not Charlie's alter ego, after all. ;D
Thank you, Kind Sir. I have to tell you that it is wonderful to be able to speak "his language" since he is totally wrapped up in radio. Having worked with him (and other engineers) professionally helped me understand what a true genious he is at what he does. If I hadn't spent 15 years in the biz I wouldn't appreciate him the same way.

Yup the ID's sounded like that...bigger than life and we would play some upbeat tune after it..Jeff told me to never play a slow as SH*# song after that id or I would be working overnights on the 2 way radio!
My rule was that you played a "turn it up" song after the ID, something that made drivers turn the radio up and, God willing, remember who kicked things up for them. "Shameless" was one of my favorite top of the hour tunes.

I think the best songs around the ID were "Addicted to Love" or "Simply Irresistable"
by Robert Palmer, "Our House" by Madness and it didn't "pop" as well unless you cranked the
intro but "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys was probably the song that just
set the tone for the beach party. You guys remember hearing those songs blasting from dozens of cars? Wouldn't happen now...they didn't have the bass to shatter other
peoples windows.....

Also "Obsession" by Annimotion was okay. Then again, when ya have a 36 song rotation it's not a real issue. Oh, and I forgot, #37 "All I Need is A Miracle" by Mike & The Mechanics
was huge after the ID....and no you didn't make ID's around commercials...

You're right, the ID's made it rock. Nowadays, it's just not an art form...

Ok I'll say it....looking back Jeff Davis was by far the BEST PD I EVER WORKED FOR!!!! Man crush? Nawww he was just so cool. I remember him handing me the format "clock" saying "Play these currents each hour...don't care when just make it sound good oh and play one Buffett song a shift and one more thing...don't suck!" Guess we were what you would call a "Rock 40" we played all the tunes you listed AND we rocked as well...We got to pick...yes I said WE got to pick the music we played... for the most part, knowing we HAD to make it sound good! I remember I wanted to play some song from Janet Jackson. Jeff said it sucked BUT if I thought it will sound good then play it. I did and it didn't and we rocked...think it was "nasty" but I could be wrong. Yes we were on all along the beach, in every car and t-shirt shop even Lavela ( sp) would play us outside to the beach. Like I said looking back WPFM was the best station I ever worked for but all good things come to an end and will never be the same. I know a lot of you have your special station and think your time was the best but for me, being an old fart now the early to mid 80's was the best time to be in radio!

I was going through some of my old tapes and I do have some from WPFM, even a couple from Little John's "Midnight Watch" where he did "lunch" at 3:10am. I also found another one with an old WPFM ID...it was from 1991 in the midst of the Gulf War. The song before the ID was "Hot In The City" and the ID must have been a special one because after the song it said "Broadcasting from the most powerful country in the world, this is WPFM Panama City USA". I've got an old one from 1987 with Kent Bailey too. That was pretty neat to hear. WPFM was definitely the station back in the day. Preston Young was always great on mornings and I also remember Mr. Lou. There was one guy who worked there who had a real southern accent....I think his name was Keith Dove. Anyone remember him? He came on after Little John left.

I also have some from the early days of Island 106. One in particular was from 1991-92 from the Gamby Man. The song ends and you hear the Gamby Man say "Your station for the 90's, Island 106 and my underwear is wet". Then you hear a jingle that says "The Gamby Man....Island, Island, Island 106!" (I know I worked at Island but it didn't have the same flavor as WPFM).

Funny thing about Preston doing mornings. Mike Stone did it for a wile and took a vacation. Preston filled in and did a great job. Mike came back and was put on mid days.
