I hear a country station 98.1 out of Galax, VA very clearly in Winston-Salem. They are playing Wake Forest football games. THey seem to be making a very strong push into this market and sound very good! Any more info. on them???

WBFX when they're not playing sports, plays a W-I-D-E variety of country hits, lots of classic. Locally owned and operated. Another station Clear Channel would love to get it's paws on and make it an all Tim McGraw/Faith Hill station! :p

Love this station!!!! ;D :D :) They play REAL bluegrass fairly often. It's the only frequency that's not public or college that touches this stuff. I love getting in range, but it's not too too often. I'm still scannin' for a good 'MOYL' or "standards" station on AM or FM if anybody has any suggestiontations???? Thank you, try the veal, it's fresh.

This station has been there a long time. Former WTQR personality, Aunt Eloise is now doing mornings at "Blue Ridge Country". You've got to love a station that's locally owned with real, live announcers! They'll play just about anything Country or Bluegrass. If you can stand the slightly amateur presentation, this station is a real gem and one of the very few of its kind left. WBRF should be supported for being REAL radio.

I was reading this discussion about WBRF and thinking back to days gone by when I was just getting my start in radio. My career began at a small town radio station. I spent several years there and was always dreaming of working at the big city station! I finally got to work at the big city station and it sucked. Now after experincing corporate radio I long for the small markets again. That's where radio is fun!

Doesn't the Epperson family own WBRF along with WPAQ and WSYD?
Ralph Eperson owned the 3 you mentioned. He was a real broadcaster unlike his brother Stu who owns Truth. Ralph managed and worked at the stations well into his old age but unfortunately Ralph took a fall and never recovered. RIP. Ralph was a GREAT guy.

WPAQ 740 has bluegrass. In the summer they play standards in the evening, I've heard.

WSAT Memories 1280 has standards. Don't look for it at night.

Does the Epperson Family also own the Galax AM station? I know that at one time it and the FM (WBRF) were co-owned. Yep, 98.1 WBRF is a true radio gem. May not be the most polished, but that's the beauty of this station. May God protect it from Clear Channel, Entercom, etc.

Epperson's daughter, Debby, owns WBRF and WWWJ while his son, Kelly, owns WSYD and WPAQ in Mt. Airy.

I totally agree!!! 98.1 sounds SO much better than those cheap channel and Enterbomb stations!!! Local high power FM radio lives in the triad!!!!

Well, technically they're in Galax, Virginia, not the Triad.

Also please pray that Big Stu & Little Stu Epperson, & their Truth Broadcasting never get their hands on 98.1. We don't need another religious, southern gospel, contemporary gospel, praise, bible toting, send us your money to keep us on the air radio station around here.

With a very strong signal off Fisher Peak (3700'+) near the VA/NC state line off I-77, it's no surprise this station covers a good part of NC well.
Actually, 98.1 serves a relatively small area of NC. It is directional towards the south to protect WPEG, 97.9 and that station slips in to cover it up maybe ten miles below the state line when driving south on I-77. OTOH, it does have a good signal to the SE and goes into Winston Salem quite well, but 98.3 crowds it out in Greensboro and High Point. 98.1 does have an excellent signal throughout SW VA, if you like bluegrass and REALLY country sounding personalities and production.

Actually, I've never had a problem with 98.1 in the area close to where WIST 98.3 FM is. Maybe I haven't been close enough to the tower. But WBRF does mess up their signal in Winston-Salem. With my newer car, it's not as bad as it used to be. I wish they had kept the WAAA simulcast, except I never got a good signal from WAAA even in Winston-Salem when they did it. That station must have been at three watts because even low-power sounds good eventually.

They had a simulcast on 790 at one time and I never listened to the FM.
