Country Music Fans to Protest at KZLA Studios Friday 8/18 at 10 AM

I want to be part of a station co-owned by Toby Keith and Reba:
what could possibly go wrong there?
Saddest part of this...they actually believe Emmis will change KZLA back if
they protest. "Let's put on a show...right here in the old barn"... jeez
93.9

If these people were smart, they'd go and beg some struggling stations or OC stations to pick up the format. I'm sure there's some dying stations around there that would want KZLA's audience.

Emmis is not going to flip back. They've already invested a ton in Movin'.

I have a feeling country will resurface very soon. And all those former KZLA jocks do need work, so...

On a side note, what's up with Emmis still having a site for KZLA (and no streaming available yet) and no site for "Movin'"? If they had enough time to sign Dees, they had time to throw up a new website, even if they just slapped a Movin' logo and a streaming link on it.

Nurse Jeff and I will be walkin the line and collecting signatures on a petition to change the call letters back to KPOL. We also want to reunite 93.9 with 15~forty. Nothing like a 24 hour polka station on AM & FM! JEEZ...after almost 26 years KZLA country couldn't crack the top 10, let alone the top 15. Get over it

I just drove by and saw three people standing out in front. One of them was a guy in a pink shirt and pink cowboy hat. Boy the country P1 crowd is larger than I thought in LA

Well, I think that all three fans SHOULD be entitled to a country stick somewhere in LA/OC. Maybe they could buy some brokered time on 900 kHz?? ;D

You can't deny the numbers - KZLA had the largest cume of any country station in the US.
Mainly becuase of LA's huge population.

EMMIS couldn't make it work. KZLA was poorly programmed. To early on new music and a morning man who came from Talk radio with a strong New England accent and attitude - country listeners love that.

Did you read that quote from their GM? "We here to serve our ADVERTISERS"???!!!!
That's what's wrong with a lot of stations - they're not serving their LISTENERS!

Listeners first, advertisers will follow.

Somebody WILL make big money with Country in the LA market.

Emmis made a major effort to sustain the format, and they grew revenue by nearly 100% since they bought it from Bonneville, where it had been in a long decline with a more "hick country" approach.

Emmis spent a lot on research to find a formula that would work in LA, and the things you criticize are precisely what they found would work best for a very limited format. Your arguments sound al lot like the applogists for dance's failure to work in the US: they don't blame the lack of appeal of the music, but, rather make allegations that the PD did not know the music, thaat the mix was wrong, that the currents were wrong, that the jocsks were wrong.

Country has nearly no Black, Asian or Hispanic appeal. It similarly has nearly no appeal among Armenians, Persians, Russians, Syrians, etc. In other words, it is left with less than 30% of the population of LA that MIGHT like country. If country gets around a 5 share in Seattle, it will get around a 5 share of the 30% of LA that is non-ethinic or otherwise not targetable... in other words, about a 1.6. And that is about what KZLA got. It could not do any better, and with LA becoming more ethnic, it would get worse.

Emmis made a sound, listener based decison that also serves advertisers: Country is not viable in LA, and there are very few to whom the music appeals. Sorry, but that is reality. Emmis did a good job, and as good as anyoe could do for this limited share potential.

Eduardo: You have your opinion, I have mine. Tilden was wrong for Country.
And, too much new, unfamiliar music doesn't work for any format.

KZLA jocks listed Rock artists as their personal favorites on KZLA web pages.

Country listeners KNOW when you're posing.

I program Country, do you? And, not that accordian crap.

If I'm not mistaken it's not like the market is devoid of country music. The greater Los Angeles metro area has 2 rim shot stations that come in quite clearly.

Yeah. I did a station with Rusty Walker and Phil Hunt. I even knew Alan Jackson when he was a video operator for TNN under John Pate's supervision.

KFRG gets an OK signal about half-way into the San Gabriel Valley, but due to terrain is not particularly useful in most of the LA market. KHAY's 70dbu only touches a corner of LA County NW of Malibu... the 64 barely gets to around Calabasas.

Country is just struggling in general... an identity crisis...

I don't think Country is struggling. The country share is high in many, many markets. The format only struggles in the largest, most ethnic markets.

Here's the weird thing about FM signals.... I live on one of the highest hills in Mission Viejo (south OC) and in the three blocks around my house, I get: K-FROG is froggy heavily interfered with by that 95.1 in Ventura; KHAY clear as a bell; and KTYD Santa Barbara(99.9 FM) steps all over KOLA. That's thanks to the Saddleback mountains being between my house and the XMTRS of K-FROG and KOLA, while the JACK-FM SD signal also is impaired by topography along with inteference from K-HAY and also "AirOne". As soon as I drive down towards the 5 fwy, those signals more local come in much better.
