Court Orders New VHF's in Philadelphia market

and we just got the new channel 4 WACP in AC that seems to be a Philly station as well. They have coverage on Comcast, Verizon, and DirecTv.

I'm sure that, for the firms bidding on these channels, anyone who actually watches them OTA will be gravy.

The channels will have extensive theoretical coverage, which will entitle them to carriage on cable & satellite & FIOS in some pretty heavily-populated (=lucrative) areas. I'm sure that's what WACP is for as well. (and note what Bill_W said about availability of WACP)

Only the Wilmington channel (channel 2) is likely to serve Philadelphia. Channel 3 is much closer to NYC and is likely to transmit from Manhattan.

So, all lowband V's will be represented between NYC & Philly?

2--Wilmington
3--NYC
4--WACP
5--Delaware (I forget where)
6--Philly

Channel 5 will be located in Seaford, DE and will serve Delmarva mostly.

Yes. The channel 3 station is to be at Middletown Township, NJ but the application called for a transmitter on Manhattan - 4 Times Square if I recall properly.

The Delaware channel 5 station is to be licensed to Seaford. The permit calls for a tower in eastern Maryland; the call letters WMDE have been assigned.

The licensee of WMDE has petitioned to have it reassigned from Seaford to Dover. This would make it a Philadelphia DMA station.

And what I forgot to say is WACP channel 4 is a waste just like channels 44 and 51, nothing but informercials. That being said, channel 44 just built a studio in Cherry Hill and are finally doing some local programming. Should Disney or News Corp buy one of these stations and do a douopoly the way CBS does? Word is that Disney was interested in channel 65 years ago? Will this new channel just be infomercials? All the other ota networks seem to be snatched up by existing subchannels and they have coverage on Comcast and Verizon, the two biggest cable operators in the region.

Interesting. Didn't hear about that one.

Wow I am gonna feel sorry for TV DXers in that area when these stations fire up....analog Es will be a challenge.

I for one will be thrilled for any new TV DX challenges....

WMCN recently added 'Roseanne' at 6:30p. If I recall correctly, WWAC used to air this show.

With 'The Jeffersons', 'All in the Family', 'Roseanne', 'America's Funniest Home Videos', 'Til Death' (worthless), and 'Cold Case Files' WMCN 44 has some schedule, and Bounce-TV on it's digital subchannel. WTVE has 'Frasier' and 'Inside Edition.' If one merged these in mind, it could be like one indy station.

I don't think Verizon Fios is carrying WACP yet, but it's pure all infomercial.

The Atlantic City area actually doesn't get Me-TV since it doesn't get WFMZ or any of its subchannels. I wonder if WACP or WMGM could pick up Me-TV rights for a subchannel since WFMZ's signal/coverage falls a little short.

Maybe NewsCorp could buy WMCN out (if it was for sale), but I'm not sure what benefit it would gain with it really.

The Salisbury DMA still lacks an NBC affiliate. If it were to gain one, the loser would be Hearst WBAL since it would likely lose coverage on cable in that market. Comcast owns the cable there and although there is satellite and Fios competition, it likely benefits when people are forced to pay for cable for access to all the major networks, so it might not want to grant an affiliate there anyways. However, it likely gains more by having an affiliate (helping NBC), rather than any potential loss of subs that drop Comcast and go pay free.

Hearst could buy out that new station and make it a new NBC, assuming it signed worked some deal with Comcast/NBC. It could be profitable. Hearst owns stations in markets of similar size like Monterey, CA and it might be a leverage thing it can work out.

Being raised in south FL in the 60s, when we went on vacation to MD to visit some relatives, it was quite interesting to see TV Guide's DC/Baltimore edition, and WBOC 16 Salisbury cherry-picking from all 3 networks. It was fun to look at.

Although those days are long gone, WAGM 8 in Maine hung on thru the mid 90s cherry-picking like WBOC, even having NFL on Fox, so they were a 4-networker briefly! The last TV station to have more than 1 network was KXGN 5 in MT thru maybe 2010.

IIRC, there were several stations in the mid '90s that aired football from Fox until their market got their own Fox station. ABC affiliate WAOW-TV Wausau WI comes to mind immediately.

They put NBC on 5.2 when they were able to. This is rather common in small markets.

WAGM put Fox on 8.1 & CBS on 8.2 I believe, but we can't count those! No cherry picking involved. Yup those days are behind us.

WACP is indeed now on Fios. What a pain, everytime someone wants to change between 3 (CBS) and ABC (6), WACP is in the middle. Maybe this alone can prop up the value of the station if it ever is up for sale. ::)

Only in SD. It's not on channel 504 yet so you can go between channels 3 & 6 in HD still on 503 & 506.
