Cox and Fox trade stations; SF/Oak duo for Boston and Memphis

Cox Media Group will trade its longtime Fox affiliate KTVU Oakland/San Francisco and its San Jose-licensed sister KICU to Fox Television Stations, in exchange for Boston's WFXT and Memphis' WHBQ-TV. Cox had owned KTVU since 1963, and KICU since 2000; Fox had been WFXT's owner for two stints--1987 to 1990, and again since 1995. Fox had been, more or less, wanting to get rid of WHBQ ever since they sold-off their stations to Local TV LLC (now part of Tribune Broadcasting), and since Local TV had already owned CBS affiliate WREG crosstown, Fox had to hang on to WHBQ.

So will Fox flip KICU to My Network TV? It seems in markets that they serve, there are two stations owned - a Fox, and a My Network TV station.

I say it's very likely that MyTV moves over to KICU, it'll be surprising otherwise. They currently run a hour each of Modern Family and Big Bang Theory in primetime between 8 and 10pm; in terms of programming schedules, both stations run a schedule quite similar to other Fox-owned stations elsewhere (at least in places like New York City and Los Angeles).

Next question: if MyNet moves to KICU, what does that mean for KRON?

If LIN/Media General would ever see KRON losing the MYNET affiliation to KICU, then there could be a chance for LIN/Media General to give up on KRON ever since after acquiring it from the Media General/Young merger deal since KRON wouldn't fit right in at all with the combined LIN/Media General merger spectrum with all the ex former Young stations included as well.

LIN/Media General would be better off swapping out the would be turn independent for the 2nd time KRON to Sinclair for Sinclair swapping out WHOI/WYZZ, WICS-WICD/WRSP-WCCU, WLUC, WPBN-WTOM/WGTU-WGTQ, WEYI/WBSF, WKRC/WSTR, WWHO, WNWO, WTOV, WJAC, WSTM/WSTQ LD, WGME/WPFO, WCHS/WVAH, WRLH, and WTTA all to LIN/Media General in addition to LIN/Media General purchasing WHTM from the Sinclair-Allbritton deal so Sinclair can keep WHP while Nexstar can keep WLYH for years to come and go.

KRON fits better with Sinclair due to ownership of stations in Fresno, Bakersfield, Reno, Las Vegas and other areas close to KRON footprint while WHOI/WYZZ,
WICS-WICD/WRSP-WCCU, WLUC, WPBN-WTOM/WGTU-WGTQ, WEYI/WBSF, WKRC/WSTR, WWHO, WNWO, WTOV, WJAC, WSTM/WSTQ LD, WGME/WPFO, WCHS/WVAH, WRLH, and WTTA fits better with LIN/Media General due to ownership of stations where LIN/Media General already has presence or will have a presence close to those TV stations respective TV markets.

Fox could trade WTVT to Tribune for KCPQ/KZJO and WPHL while Cox could trade KIRO to CBS for WUPA and WTOG.

The trading and swapping of TV stations between LIN/Media General and Sinclair would allow Sinclair to purchase the Stainless Broadcasting Company TV stations from Brian W Brady even if Nexstar/Mission could not be able to purchase WICZ/WBPN LP in Binghamton, NY with Brady changing his mind to change and alter the deal with Nexstar and to decide to sell off KVTV in Laredo, TX and KYMA/KSWT in Yuma, AZ to Nexstar instead of attempting to sale off WICZ/WBPN LP to Nexstar/Mission. A Sinclair purchase of the Stainless TV stations from Brady would enable Sinclair to fully owned KAYU in Spokane, WA while being able to fully regain WSYT and WNYS from Brady with the FOX affiliation moving to the .2 of CBS stations KIMA in Yakima, WA, KEPR in Tri-Cities, WA, and KTVL in Medford, OR without any issues since all or the majority of Brady's TV stations have always been weak performers except for WICZ palling in comparison to the CBS stations Sinclair acquired over the years from the Fisher and Freedom acquisitions of TV stations in the Pacific Northwest.

Then would CW go to .3 on KIMA/KEPR? I don't think KCYU/KFFX would like that at all - going CW or IND.
#2 - KCPQ as a Fox O&O might not be good either. They would have to drop "Q13" by mandate and go to a crappy, boring "Fox 13" like KSTU and WHBQ.
#3 - Same with KIRO. "CBS 7"? I don't think so.

James, please spare us your fantasy musings on this. You are the only person who can turn a simple swap of four stations into a proposed major upheaval in several markets ... which make sense to you and no one else.

The smaller question among this is how fast KICU could get MyNetworkTV; I assume KRON is locked down until September 2016, unless MG or LIN is completely willing to go to a WGN/KTLA/KSNV strategy of going for a near all-news schedule and willing to let MyNet go for a bit of Fox compensation. Or even more intriguing (though a pipe dream I admit); they pull a KHAS and sell off the channel 4 license for cash and affiliate extensions to NBCU, who would happily close up KNTV to be back on Sutro again. Remember, LIN got affiliate extensions despite a hard tax hit when they sold their quarter-interests in KNSD and KXAS to NBCU.

If this anything like the Charlotte situation, Fox can put MyNetworkTV on KICU as soon the swap gets approved. There's a contract clause that lets them pull the affiliation when they purchase a station in the same market. That's how they were able to pull the Fox affiliation from WCCB. And since MyNet is only a syndication service, it shouldn't be as hard.

But what about KRON? Why are they getting dragged into this?

Simple answer, lost amidst the noise from the armchair quarterbacks.

In markets where Fox has a duopoly, their second station is a MyNetwork affiliate. (KCOP/13 LA, WWOR-TV/9 NYC, etc.)

In SF, the present MyNetwork affiliate is KRON.

There is known to be a clause in Fox and MyNetwork affiliation agreements that allows Fox to de-affiliate a station if they acquire a station in the market.

KRON, therefore, is expected to lose MyNetwork to KICU once the ownership changes.

But in reality, isn't My Network only a two-hour block, five or six nights a week? Yeah, you lose a few popular shows with the youth and/or urban crowd. But if a station has some good recent off-network reruns, you can put them in there. The rest of the schedule stays the same.

I suppose there aren't too many big-market, full-signal independent stations that have significant viewership and a real news department. There's KHJ-TV Los Angeles, which uses prime time to run 8pm and 9pm newscasts. I seem to remember Phoenix has a major independent station. Not sure about others.

Tribune would probably hate to give KCPQ to Fox Television Stations. They would have to, by mandate, get rid of their "Q13" branding that has been used for over 30 years (back as an adult-orientated indie in the early 1980s) and go with a crappy "Fox 13" like WHBQ/KSTU. That would not be good at all.

The sale was consummated in April and Fox took over control then, but WJZY didn't actually assume the Fox affiliation until the WCCB affiliation agreement with Fox expired June 30 of last year. The switch happened the next day.
