Crooker's Rmx to Day n Nite in regular rotation on 953-Part.. I mean.. Power 953

...Of note only because this is the first time (at least, that I'm aware of) a dance remix was spun in regular rotation at Power. Power has long emulated Power 96 in Miami, so maybe this will mean some of the crossover songs that receive airplat at WPOW will make it onto WPYO in the future. CHRles, do you think some of the rumors of CBS flipping Mix to AMP radio plays a role here? Stay tuned!

Amp Radio arrived over the weekend on Mix 105.1's HD2 channel:
http://www.mix1051.com/pages/4201628.php

I kinda wished it would replace Mix 105.1 as few people have, or even care about HD Radio. Orlando is long overdue for a good old fashioned CHR/Pop war, especially since XL 106.7 leans a bit on the adult side, which is funny for a CHR in a city like Orlando.
Still, for all we know Amp may still be coming to Orlando's FM dial in a few months after an initial HD run.

Another dance song 95.3 is also playing is Pitbull's Calle Ocho.

In the last year they have open up their playlist to rhythmic songs like I Kissed A Girl-Katy Perry, Both Lady Gaga songs,Break The Ice and Womanizer-Britney. Usually playing the more urban mix if available.

XLl 106.7 now has a great dance show on fri and sat nights. On sat they go from 8pm-4am. The mix show is simliar to Tampa's FLZ mix show since he hosted that one previously. This show is probably the best thing to happen to the Orlando underground scene. The show sounds very local with a heavy amount of breaks being played.

Re: Crooker's Rmx to Day n Nite in regular rotation on 953-Part.. I mean.. Power

They still play a lot of those annoying Florida Breaks in the clubs? I thought a lot of DJs in Tampa and Orlando switched over to House and Electro.
I like some Breaks, especially the more progressive Breaks kind, but most of the Florida Breaks were always super cheesy and kind of outdated sounding.

I can list a ton of songs from all dance subsets that most people would find cheesy. However,we need to get past the mentality that one dance subset is better than the other.

All the top dance DJs in Tampa and Orlando are breaks DJs primarily. Yet,most have always played electro and other dance subsets.Trance and "rave" went hand in hand with breaks during the 96-2003 era. One thing that is true is that the central florida area has never been into pop remixed into house/diva house songs.

There has always been support for pure dance artists. Most recently September and David Guetta. WFLZ was spininng those traxx on their mix show way before anyone thought they might be a hit. ;)

Good points. It sure seems like breaks have been becoming more popular again (for example, the DJ X remix of black eyed peas is in heavy rotation on BPM). I can name a few cases where clubs have bought back some late 90's/early 00 DJ's back replacing hip hop dj's. The breaks scene has always been pretty strong; I don't see it going away any time soon. I'd hate to see anything change though. Part of why I love America is how different our tastes are in different parts of the country. Detroit is known for techno, NY is known for house, and Orlando/Tampa are known for breaks. Miami seems to fall in between NY, Orlando, and is also known for trance. I really appreciate the diversity between cities. Personally, I love florida breaks. I really missed that stuff when I lived up north.

Next time you're in Orlando, though, check out Bliss ultra lounge on church street if you'd like to hear something other than breaks. It's all trance/house (mainly trance) on Saturday nights. Really good stuff.

You and Morpheus are cool, and both listen to a lot of good stuff so I respect you both. Here's my grip with this whole Florida Breaks issue.
You mentioned other cities with their own sound. Even though Detroit is known for Techno most clubs over there do not play it.
Miami used to be known for Electro, then it also used to be known for Trance, and used to be known for Tribal. Most clubs in Miami do not stand still, and genres change down there as far as styles dominating its club scene. It's dynanic, it's healthy, and that's why it's always been ahead of the rest of Florida.
While there are a few good DJs and producers from the Florida Breaks scene, such as Icey, Sharaz, Tony Feline, Infiniti, Malicious Mike, Jackal & Hyde, KJ, most of the other ones are mediocre at best. So what ended up happening was you'd go to a club and ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS hear the same songs for years. I'm not exaggerating FOR YEARS! It annoyed the shit out of me always hearing "Children of the 80s", DJ Icey's "The One", Terra Skye's "Is This Love", Tony Allen "Take Me Higher", a mediocre Breaks remix to Delerium's "Silence", an even crappier bootleg Breaks remix to Darude's "Sandstorm", Robin Fox "I See Stars", Sharaz "Blinded", etc. b/c even if I liked some of these records it was no fun goin clubbin if the Breaks DJs were on decks as you'd get burned out on hearing these songs over and over and over again. Yeah, it brought out some of the women to the dancefloor due to the familiarity factor, but they could just have just as easily been playing "The Macarena" for years and had women rush to the dancefloor.
It was nauseating.

Now I loved Robin Fox I see stars and running on empty. and DJ Icey-Dreams,,, but otherwise places like Tampa would bore me. I like how in Chicago we can hear Euro, Deep house, progressive,,,, Trance, Jumpstyle, and Hardhouse at the same club.... It may be my worthless opinion or maybe its the midwesterner in me, but I think Chicago has the most interesting scene... and Has had the best Dance stations in the past... Energy 927&5 the old B-96 and most recently and currently Dance Factory. The Chicago Mixmasters knew how to evolve their sound with the times.

Indianapolis and Columbus are stuck on Minimal;, Progressive house and trance.... Prog is more entertaining than Breaks,, but it still gets old.... Minimal is cool, but gets old very fast.

That song is massive here in Australia... I couldn't believe it when i switched on SAFM (top 40 station) and it was on there... Aside from old dance tracks that they occasionally put on air such as Haddaway - What is love, they hardly ever play dance, especially not this kinda stuff!

Sa-FM out of Adelaide? They're a pretty good CHR, similar to the other Austereo Top 40 stations - 2Day FM Sydney, The Fox in Melbourne, B-105 Brisbane, and 92.9 FM Perth.
You've also got the awesome Nova 93.7 for an edgier Top 40 sound, but best of all Adelaide has its own great Dance station - Fresh FM 92.7.
I've noticed Sydney recently got its own Dance station called Z-FM on 90.2 FM

Can't believe I missed this well thought out post. A lot of the songs you mentioned above are personal favorites, but ignoring that, I can sympathize that not everyone has my own musical taste. It would get a little nauseating (I won't go quite as far as to fully agree with the analogy to Macarena, though!) because at the heyday of 953-Party, each club was playing the same music because of the familiarity of those songs you mentioned. Now, at least there is a lot more diversity. I would argue it's easier finding a club playing trance or house music than it would be to find one that regularly plays breaks. I could be wrong on that, however. Regrettably, we lost Mannequin's Dance Palace in Pleasure Island- they were consistent in playing trance music. Returning to the downtown scene, Vintage http://savepleasureisland.blogspot.com/2009/05/club-report-vintage_17.html is another great option for trance/house music.

On the spirit of the original post, with the amazing success of Power 95-3, I am shocked that another conglomerate (e.g., CBS) hasn't tried competing in the Rhythmic/CHR arena. With all the resources Cox spent in shedding references to 953-Party, you can tell that they are always going to hesitate to add the dance tracks that Power 96/Miami is playing.
