CRTC says no to new radio station in Saskatoon

The actual decision was issued a few days ago, but has finally filtered down to the local media. The CRTC based its decision on an assessment finding that--despite the area's current growth--allowing an additional commercial station would adversely affect "the low aggregate profitability" of local broadcasters, which is supposedly "well below the national average".

The StarPhoenix interviewed an official at Fabmar Communications--one of the groups that urged the CRTC to grant a new license--for its story (at http://www.thestarphoenix.com/news/CRTC+says+radio+station+Saskatoon/9173124/story.html); there's also a local CBC story (at http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saska...n-doesn-t-need-more-radio-crtc-says-1.2428241). And, the official CRTC statement is at http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2013/2013-606.htm.

Puget Sound Radio is reporting that the unnamed applicant was Huber Communications headed by former Saskatoon jock Steve "Hurricane" Huber.
