CSN Philly cuts off boxing main event to air 1 AM SportsNite?

I sent this e-mail to Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia:
I'm upset because I just noticed in my VCR tape that CSN Philly didn't bother to air the rest of the main event of the Best Damn boxing special early Friday morning. the card had 3 women's boxing matches. It was a 10 rounder of the main event and you cut it off at the 7th round and showed the 1 AM sportsnite? Are you kidding me? Why is getting that show on more important than showing the rest of the fight. CSN Should drop the 1 AM sportnite if CSN is going to cut off live boxing events or games that start at 11 PM so the event can be aired until its conclusion. I'm shocked by this.

Hopefully the folks at CSN got a chuckle out of that rant.

SportsNite is their signature show, and even at 1 am it's more important than a filler boxing show.

However you don't cut off a live sporting event in progress no matter how minor or major interest it is in my opinion.

Julius, are you sure the Best Damn Boxing Event was live? BDSSP is shown on a delay on CSN from the outset, so I don't know that it was live. Furthermore, there's something to be said about the fact that FSN programming on CSN isn't all neccessarily must carry.

I think it was and second if the FSN programming is not must carry, then why is CSN Philly an FSN affiliate then?

CSN isn't outright owned by FSN obviously and hence their relationship is more of a partnership then a full fledged affiliation, hence other programs (notably FSN Final Score) are not seen on CSN. They use FSN simply for scheduling gaps, in my opinion.

Does anyone have any advice on what Julius can do to utilitze his extra energy/spirit?
If he had money, I would suggest startng his own internet radio station.

Anyway, as mentioned all FSN programing on CSN, is filler stuff. They only show FSN programing to begin with, because there isn't any local stuff they can show everynight. They probably would've cut off the boxing for paid programing. Nothing you can do, except maybe get directv, and order their sports package. Then you will have every FSN in the country. Ofcoarse they get blacked out for various sporting events, and ofcoarse you won't have comcast sports net anymore, and thus very few Phillies/sixers/flyers games to watch.

You guys have to admit that it's pretty unprofessional to chop off the end of a sports event that you're showing (no matter how trivial of an event you may think it is). If it's worth airing at all, it should be aired in its entirety.

Granted, the Best Damn Boxing Event probably isn't a signature show for CSN but they still should not have cut into it before its finished. Shows a lack of respect for anyone who happens to be watching it. And, doing that makes CSN look really amateurish too. I know this wasn't exactly as pivitol as the imfamous "Heidi game", but then again, CSN ain't NBC either. I mean, what in the schedule would be hurt? A repeat of a fishing show at 2:15 am? Come on.

Better to pre empt the entire event to accomodate the all-important 1:00 am sportsnite update than to have an operator use his 2 left thumbs to program an automated cut in at 1. If I cared about the ladies boxing event (which I don't), I'd have been ticked off too.

[/quote] We need to call our politicians in Harrisburg and DC and tell them to tell comcast to put CSN Philly on the dish before the end of April of this year. I need every person that has satellite TV in Philly to do this. Nothing doesn't get done in life unless we complain do something about it. If you want to also contact CSN Philly:

It was wrong for CSN Philly to do that. I hope they won't do that again.

Cable channels are generally automated. This sounds like an automation glitch. The program was scheduled to end at one and did not. The automation system took the next scheduled program at 1 am. Stop acting like they did this deliberately just to upset you.

CSN is an affiliate of Fox Sports Network. That means they pick and chose what FSN programming they carry. Affiliates are always independent. We no longer have network affiliates in Philadelphia. All the major network stations are owned and operated.

I am sick of sports events running over and screwing up the rest of the schedule (and any scheduled TiVo recordings). In a perfect world, all sports events would be on sports channels - not on network channels. Failing that, broadcasters should insist that games run by the clock. The game ends at a designated time, no matter what is happening. Sports should be run like game shows.

That is the most idiotic statement I've ever heard. How in the world could a sporting event be run like a game show. Have you ever played in, or even seen a sporting event? "Ok, There's one out in the third inning, but we've gone over the six minute time limit, so lets go to commercial, and start the fouth inning when we come back"

Jock worshipers get really nasty. Talk about obsessions.

In case you haven't noticed, the people who run organized sports have been tweaking the rules since they started - to sell more tickets and get more viewers.

And they call them "ballgames" because they ARE games. Just like they call them "game shows" because they also are games.

Sports is the toy department of life. - Howard Cossell

The example you give is ridiculous. Baseball would tricky to time but it seldom interferes with network prime time programming. But the other major sports would be a lot more interesting if they did away with time-outs (and 60 Minutes would start on time).

Boxing, however, is already timed (rounds and time between rounds) and times are very predictable. It is strange that a boxing match should run over.

Sky-high murder rate in Philadelphia, out of control public schools, major gun violence, budget issues, and Julius wants the Federal government to force Comcast to put CSN/Phila on "the dish" because putting a regional sports channel on satellite will prevent women's boxing from being dumped by a local show?

AND WHY THE HELL ARE YOU VIDEO TAPING WOMEN'S BOXING AT 1AM?!?
