CTV announces 'Canada AM' to suddenly end 43-season run

“Canada AM” fans expressed shock on Thursday as CTV announced the seminal morning program would be ending its 43-year run just a day later.

“There was no warning,” said Elaine Uskoski, a holistic health practitioner in Caledon, Ont. “I don’t think that’s fair to the fans.”

CTV declined a request for interviews on Thursday but said in a statement that it was making the move in order to evolve its programming.

“As the television landscape continues to evolve, so too must our programming. We look forward to building upon the success of ‘Canada AM’ as we move forward,” said Randy Lennox, president of entertainment production and broadcasting at Bell Media.

“We invite viewers and fans to join us as we say goodbye tomorrow and acknowledge the lasting legacy this series and its talent — both now and in the past — have had on Canada’s broadcasting industry.”

Billed as “Canada’s most-watched national morning newsmagazine,” “Canada AM” has been airing since 1972, providing news and lifestyle headlines as well as interviews with stars and newsmakers.

CTV said it will announce a new program for the 6 to 9 a.m. timeslot next week. A simulcast of live CTV News Channel programming will air in the timeslot on CTV beginning Monday.

Friday’s episode will be a tribute to both the program and its hosts.

What would take its place? A simulcast of a U.S. morning show?

Don't count on Bell Media to partner up with a US network for a simulcast, plus it would be a slap in the face to Canadian viewers. Chances are that it'll be more news-driven.

Welcome to YOUR MORNING: CTV’s New Morning Show to Premiere this Summer

CTV reaffirmed its commitment to original daytime television with the announcement today of a new, daily, morning program. From Bell Media In-House Productions, the live, three-hour program YOUR MORNING will premiere at the end of the summer. The network also confirmed that trusted news veteran Anne-Marie Mediwake (CBC TORONTO NEWS) and entertainment journalist Ben Mulroney (ETALK) will host the series.

YOUR MORNING is a new approach to morning television. The series will deliver an original perspective and unique insight into the stories of the day, while showcasing lifestyle topics of interests to Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast. News on the program will be delivered by CTV News, Canada’s most-watched news organization.

YOUR MORNING will air weekday mornings on CTV (Ontario, Québec, and Eastern Canada) and nationally on CTV News Channel from 6-9 a.m., kicking off CTV’s leading original daytime lineup.
