Cumulus Media to add ESPN rival CBS Sports Radio to 47 stations

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/espn_radio_sacked_H7pmVZM058sECDWVcQ6sRM

As a result, CBS Sports Radio will air on around 100 stations, reaching about 10 million households, when it officially launches on Jan. 2. It also claims it will be the “most listened to sports radio network in the top 50 markets.”

ESPN, however, will continue to beat in total audience by a long shot.

The long-time leader boasts 350 full-time station affiliates and reaches an estimated 30 million households. It has 700 affiliates overall.

CBS will not be on 1/3 of the stations of ABC/Disney and CC/Premiere after this deal. If they wanted to be bigger than Yahoo then break out the champagne!

ESPN and Fox Sports still has nothing to Contend with Just yet.

Now who will be the first to bow out among the remaining 3. NBC, Yahoo or CBS. and if i was ESPN with the stations that bailed ship. if CBS fails. and Cumulus comes running back to ESPN if those markets dont get filled. id tell Cumulus a big FU if i was espn. and maybe if FSR isnt in those markets FSR should say you bailed mid contract on ESPN why should we take you if you could be a potential flight risk

The difference is, CBS will have clearance in major markets. ESPN can claim the same clearance. FSR certainly cannot.

ESPN & CBS will have a presence in every top 20 market. FSR can only claim 9 in the top 20 and only 3 in the top 10 after CBS arrives. Not having New York, Chicago, Philly, will always be a huge problem for FSR/CC/Premiere

CBS Sports Radio doesn't have a station yet in my market (Minneapolis-St. Paul) and it's a top 20 one. Unless the New York Post has a list of affiliates in it's article, I'll only believe it when I hear of it.

CBS Can Claim the top 2 markets. but thats only because the some shows on the network are based in Chicago & NYC. But Chicago and NYC wont be carrying the CBS Sports radio Network 24/7

They will be once The Fan & The Score both go FM.

No sports talk radio fan will listen to these "new" national shows in Philly, New York, Dallas, LA and especially Chicago. Are you serious? Those fans listen to their local shows for a reason. Check and see how 98.7 The Fan is doing going up against KNBR in San Francisco?

They will actually "hear" the new network...several of CBS' major market stations clear YSR and other's for overnights and some weekend content. All that goes away on Jan 3. So no more "YSR Overnight Takeover" in Chicago, Detroit, Dallas and Tampa (which already dumped YSR in August). So the new CBS late night and overnight programming will presumably get those clearances upon launch. BTW, still no word on an affiliate in Los Angeles.

There are plenty of transplants in every large metro that doesn't have loyalty to the local teams, so 'no fans' is not true. Local shows may rate better, but they often stay 'local' for a reason too--their hack hosts aren't good enough to carry nationally distributed shows, either. There aren't many national shows that are worth it, but the effort isn't wasted--especially now with social media.

YSR is still on KTCK 1310AM in Dallas

More than likely the CBS overnight programming will run on KRLD-FM and not KTCK.
