D/FW Radio; The talent pool is dry, and it has been for a while.

Well...here you go. The name is Don Bender of Frisco (formally of North Dallas). My email is texdjb1957@verizon . Anything else? Oh? and "Herself"? For the record I am a himself. Always have been since 1957. Look, whether you are who you say you are, I am just voicing my opinion. That is still a right in this country as of lately. Being in the public eye, learn to take some criticism. Not everyone is going to like you. Instead of whining about it, prove us wrong. I do believe radio is alive. So prove it to me. That is all I am going to say.
So where's your talent? I don't like Well's show (not my cup of tea) but he's apparently got SOME talent if he's on in a top 5 market. And yes, ratings and revenue is how those of us actually in the business measure success-
probably because those of us who actually put food on the table by doing this realize that talent is a nebulous thing- what you think is a talent may not be the same as what I think-

Heck "Pigvomit" didn't think Stern was talented- and he may not be a talented 'classic' DJ. But he's VERY talented at entertaining people, getting people to listen to his show, and buy the products that his advertisers are hawking.

So like I said, since different people have a different concept of talent, ratings and revenue are hard numbers that we can look at and ask 'is this jock talented at getting more people to listen to him(or her)?"

Yet another one "Where's your talent". Listen, I am a radio listener, an enthusiast if you will. I am the one who LISTENS to the radio and not WORK in radio. I am not challenging anyone that I can do a better job, because I couldn't. It's not my field of expertise. However, I am simply stating my opinion. I thought that's what these message boards were for. Instead, I obviously keep offending the folk who work in radio. I am stating my POV from this side of the dial and what it looks like from here. That's all. I don't doubt that ratings and so forth decide everything. I am simply stating that it's a shame it does. Hence, the problem with radio today. Well's show is not the greatest show on radio...my opinion. I stated that fact and he (whether it be him or not) came back at me with all defenses up. You are correct when you say what I think is talent may not be the same as what someone else would think. Some people think Brittany Spears is talented. I do not. My opinion. That's what is still great about this country. We are able to state our opinions. If it offends you, then get thicker skin or choose another profession. I am finished with this discussion.

;D So far, I've resisted, but the AARP folks are lobbying...hard!!

radioisalive,

Since it appears you are new to this site, welcome aboard!

Just a tip for you. There are a few posters on this board who are what we call CONsultants. These CONsultants spin everything to make their opinions seem credible. As far as most of us regular joe posters are concerned, CONsultants are a major part of what's wrong with radio today. They spend way too much time thrashing about ratings, revenue and anything else they can come up with. No they are not the only problem with radio, but they are a fairly large part of it.

Don't worry about these few CONsultants. :)

First of all, let's apply some Truth in communications to this exercise:

You said: "....Well's show is not the greatest show on radio...my opinion....I stated that fact and he (whether it be him or not) came back at me with all defenses up....." A few critical points, if I may:

One: It should be "Wells' show", not "Well's show"....My name is Wells, not Well.

Two: Opinions aren't facts.

Three: It is actually me.

Four: I was not being defensive. I simply accepted your challenge to my abilites, and then called on you to defend your statements, in the way that cuts the quickest to the ultimate point....State your credentials, and your accomplishments, which you should have done at the beginning of this conversation; "I'm a DFW Radio listener and enthusiast, and in my opinion The Wells Report blows!". My response at that point would have been to ask why you as a listener felt that way....Which BTW is damn important, and worthy of cordial discussion. And Finally, speaking of cordial discussion...

Five: You didn't say that you believed The Wells Report "isn't the greatest show on the radio" ....You called me a "train wreck". Crazy me, I do tend follow up on that kind of loose talk nearly every time.

Finally, I will gladly take up your call in this exchange, and will extend my efforts to show that you are correct; Radio is alive.

Good for you, Don. Glad you identified yourself. Sincerely, I appreciate your intent, if not your ability to communicate it.

Take Care....

there will be few operators who will come out of this, but the ones who DO, will be the ones who keep QUALITY PROGRAMMING and "PERSONALITY" on the air while the others are "SUCKING". in doing so, they will create loyalty.
its the same reason Wal-Mart will be around when others won't, after the dust settles.

OK....Always willing to learn.

Um, where will I find your ratings-independent, quality-laced, Top-5 Market PM Drive Talk Show?

Responding to a troll post on a forum is like winning the Special Olympics. You don't *really* win.

I'm not trying to "win".

Just trying to keep it real....

....ish.

I know it's never going to happen in my lifetime, but the answer is that talent ought to have the ownership interest in the stations, and they should then hire the management staff to support them.

When the FCC relaxed owership rules and these huge conglomorates took over markets, radio as a creative and legitimate arm of show business died a quick death.

I made a bit more than a grand a month when I worked in the New Orleans market while in school. We're talking about circa 1958. The top jock in the city was making 4 times as much as I. Both were excellent jobs for the times.
