Dale Dudley Exits KLBJ-FM Mornings After Nearly 35 Years

In a statement to the Austin Chronicle, Waterloo Media SVP/Market Manager Scott Gilmore stated that Dudley’s contract was not renewed as opposed to being fired. They wrote, “Dale Dudley was on KLBJ-FM for just over 34 years and we greatly appreciate his years of entertaining generations of Austin audiences. Dale fearlessly talked about his personal life journeys with wit and passion. Dale was not fired – it’s just time for the station to try something a little different and Dale’s contract was not renewed. We hope listeners will tune into 93.7 in the coming weeks to see what develops.”

Gilmore confirmed to the Chronicle that Fonseca and producer Eric ‘Chuy’ Alderete will remain in mornings.

Big props to RadioPatrol for beating me to this post by 12 hours. I think I have been the only KLBJ-FM Morning Show listener here so I was surprised that someone had already posted the news. Seriously, good job RadioPatrol!

"Dudley shared on Facebook that he was fired at the end of todays show."

So who do you wanna believe? The DJ who's out of a job or the big radio company that would wanna look like roses? Why would a contract end on a Monday? At least wait until the 35th anniversary of his show if not firing him.

There are a bunch of comments about this in the RadioInk article. You have to scroll down a little past the article to see the comments.

They are saying they will announce the new member(s) on Monday.

Just off the top of my head, the last ones to leave the show "recently" were:

Dale Dudley (host)
Matt Bearden (host)
CJ Morgan (content, Internet, also on-air)
Daniel Gallo (producer, also on-air)
Carissa Jade (producer, also on-air)
Charlie Hodge (host)

Who do they bring in now?
Do they bring in two new people to replace Matt and Dale or just one?

All I will say is when you have a contract coming up for renewal and the company you contracted with is not talking to you about renewal as the contract term ends, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to know you had better polish up that resume. Was he fired? In a way he was but not without warning. Silence from the negotiating table spoke loudly here...contract completed and not renewed. That's why on that day he says he felt the way he did. He knew he was gone and so did the station.

Dale Dudley was preparing for this time.

He got his real estate license a year or two ago.

His wife was making more than him as a real estate agent and is now a full-time trainer at that real estate agency.

They owned at least four properties (their house and three rental properties).

They recently sold one of the rental properties and made a lot of money on that sale.

They don't appear to be hurting financially.

Dale had been saying that if he had to take a pay cut for the next contract he would start a real estate business and advertise it for free on his show.

When your contract isn't renewed, you're fired unless they offer you the opportunity to work at a fair wage without a contract.

On Monday, in addition to announcing the new member(s) of the Morning Show, they are going back to live 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

They had been playing portions of old shows from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM and going live from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

Just wanted to give KISS-FM San Antonio props for letting Lisle and Hahn hit 25 years. They brought in Billy Madison a few months later, sure, but at least they let the guys hit that anniversary mark.

I've never listened to the Billy Madison show until recently, and I find it very entertaining. The show reminds me of the Drex Morning Show from the KTFM days.

Does anyone know where Billy Madison ranks in morning drive?

I liked the Drex O'Drawers Morning Show. I used to listen to them on my way to Palo Alto College from Floresville in Fall 1998 and Spring 1999. His co-hosts were Ms Ree and I can't remember the female co-host but it was a very entertaining show. Last I heard Drex was in Chicago, but that was years ago.

I’m curious as well; my guess is the morning show skews much younger than the music that follows. My sense is BMS targets 18-34, while musically KISS seems 35-54. I’m also curious how KISS does the rest of the day. Is there a drop off from mornings or relatively consistent throughout the day?

I enjoy KISS musically as it plays rock alternative and active rock. The music that it plays ranges in years from 1990-2005, so it definitely targets 35-54. KISS did pretty well in the last Nielsen ratings that I saw. Randy Bonillas does it great job over there.
