STAR 102.1 bodied everyone, not exactly a big surprise.

KXT is showing some surprising strength for their signal and exposure. Up to a 1.8. They were at a 1.1 not long ago. Somebody found them and spread the word around.

KDMX got a boost from younger people during the period too.

Finally, we can continue laughing at The Freak like every month.

The Freak is a big joke

Well, the “experts” said give The Freak 2 years. Just another half a year or so to go, I’m sure it’s all up from here 🤣

I was driving to Plano the other day, and against my better judgement, I listened to the mid day show on 97.1.

Here's the bit they were doing. Are you ready for this genius?

"Call in now and tell us a Dad joke and win concert tickets."

Look, I know we're not in the glory days of radio, and I understand there's a lot you can't do that you USED to be able to get away with. Having said that, this station bills itself as this outrageous, crazy, off-the-handle talk station - yet - every time I listen it just sounds like 3 or 4 people were thrown in a room and they're just sitting there talking with absolutely no plan, prep, or guidance. (HEAVY on the no guidance.)

There's no excuse for the absolute DISMAL programming on this station, this late in the game.

KISS is 13th in the market. I never thought I'd see the day where that station wasn't in the top 5, much less not in the top 10.

The Spot and Jack FM play more rock and classic rock than they do anything. Speaking of which, what the Hell happened to KZPS? Jesus.

Mix 102.9's morning show - I've heard so many phone calls setting up bits that sound like the secretary acting. I cringe when I hear it. Ya know, like, "Hey guys I listen every morning, love you love your show. I JUST HAD to call and tell you about this. I found out my girlfriend's boyfriend is cheating on her and I need help from you guys. Is it my place to say something? I'm scared to death. OMG! What should I do?" - What should Patty do you guys, give us a call now.

I don't even know why I started typing this . . . all it does is just irritate the Hell out of me.

ON A POSITIVE: Casey Bartholomew on WBAP sounds awesome.

hey you never know the freak could one day get radio rights to Texas Rang - um, never mind. Or what if Jerry Jones decides to leave 105.3 and go to the freak one day like experts said? 🤣

I think the Cowboys are a laughing stock by now so putting them on The Freak would make sense

Quick question about how stations are encoded for PPM. Does a station that’s broadcast on several different frequencies require multiple encoders or is 1 encoder sufficient? Also, if 1 encoder is sufficient, are they able to separate ratings by frequencies? Additionally, if multiple encoders are required, does Nielsen require all stations are encoded?

Just curious when it comes to ratings for stations such as the following:

WBAP - 820/93.3/99.5 HD2
KRLD - 1080/105.3 HD2/100.3 HD2/98.7 HD2

And others with multiple frequencies.

Every frequency is separately encoded with its own unique identity.
Also, if 1 encoder is sufficient, are they able to separate ratings by frequencies?
Stations that use "Single Line Reporting" (all signals' audiences combined in the ratings) could actually elect to have each one reported separately. Nielsen only combines them in the final processing if the stati9on elects SLR.
Additionally, if multiple encoders are required, does Nielsen require all stations are encoded?
Nobody has to encode. Nielsen is not the FCC. But even most non-subscribed station elect to encode because showing as much total audience as possible benefits all radio, even the stations not driven by ratings.

The addendum to what David said is that a translator is supposed to not have separate encoding but carry the encoding of the parent station.
If I owned an AM/FM-translator combo I would want to know what percentage of the audience is listening to each. Would also give ammunition to the argument that translators should be reclassified as primary signals, allowing the (usually irrelevant) AM to be shut down.

Per Nielsen's "Local Radio Syndicated Services Description of Methodology", 2018:
PPM:
"From both an FCC broadcast regulations perspective and from a ratings perspective, an FM translator is not a
standalone ‘radio station’ on par with full-service FM radio stations. As such, our standard station reporting and encoding
policies do not apply to translators. To help ensure that a station receives credit for audience delivered by a translator,
the station should send its PPM-encoded signal to the translator for re-transmission. (Note: Our FM translator policies
also apply to boosters and repeaters.)"

Diary:
"We do not consider an FM translator to be a ‘station.’ As such, we do not assign listening credit ‘to’ any translator. Instead, we assign listening credit for entries that report listening to a translator to the station that re-transmits its signal on the translator."

The addendum to what David said is that a translator is supposed to not have separate encoding but carry the encoding of the parent station.
The key is that the translator is not a separate station, and must retransmit the originating station or HD channel. Huff posted the way that Nielsen treats this, based on FCC rules.
