Dallas radio is in a sad state these days. This market used to have stations that set industry standards. Our neighbors to the south in Austin have much better choices. Even the Clear Channel stations in Austin don't seem to have come out of the same jello mold, for example, KVET and KPEZ. A good shake up is needed. Angry and/or hateful responses are welcome.

Rather than complain about it why don't you give us your ideas and suggestions to make it better.

Mr. CatfishJimPrewitt:

You obviously haven't been paying attention. That's not the way this board works. Apparently you are supposed to b1tch and moan all day long about: how horrible things are, how stupid ALL management is, how evil the corporations running the business are, etc. Offering solutions to start a meaningful and inciteful discussion don't seem to be an option.

OK folks, sharpen your steely knives while I close my eyes real tight...

Can you really compare the Dallas market to the Austin market? Radio isn't so much about quality or "the music" anymore. More than ever, radio is exclusively about the bottom line. I think I see the point that you're trying to make but Austin stations are simply selling what the market (or it is perceived that the market) wants. Am I off the mark here? I'm not sure KVET would bring a better book than KPLX or KSCS. However, in the past, I have mentioned the "need" for some type of "world class rock" station in DFW. Many others have made clear points as to why that wouldn't do well here and I do agree. Although I would like to hear something in the way of a rock format that is slightly less generic, focusing a bit on new independent music and variety, I don't think it would do very well in DFW.

I appreciate your response Catfish. I should have sounded less negative and been more specific. What I am espousing is a different approach. There are a few stations here and there that come across as being focused solely on the music. These are stations that offer and verbally express a no BS approach to the music. They don't talk over the music and who knows, they may even play tracks other than single releases once in a while. I think that would do well in the DFW market if it were properly imaged. There are a number of examples around the US KBCO, KBZT, KFOG. Blend in a local image and presto.Believe me I realize that radio is about money. My intention is to point the segment that isn't being reached. Thanks for reading.

I'll go first...
KPEZ isn't a very good example. Their ratings have been down since the early '90s, and the "World Class Rock" bit has just sent them lower. KVET is another story. Continuity has something to do with it; they've been about the same thing for decades. They've got a history of great talent, community involvement and support for local artists (at least on the morning show). What they've accomplished can't be duplicated in a book or two... It takes years to develop the image and goodwill they have. Having a decent programmer helps too.
Dallas licenses are so pricey, no one has the patience to wait years for something to grow and develop. They'd rather "Jack" it, or "Beat" it, or "Kiss" it, or "insert flavor of the month here"
Next?

I'm a mobile deejay on the side in addition to working in radio and what I've noticed with music in the past decade or so is that it's just bad, and therefore stations that specialize in music are therefore peddling a lousy product in most cases. I see the Bone billboard around town touting Van Halen and Led Zeppelin and just want to yawn. Am I the only one who just doesn't want to hear that crap from the 70s and 80s? And to see the Rolling Stones on tour is just downright depressing, a throwback to a long lost age when rock ruled and societal standards fell, an age I gladly want to sweep away not to see again. and Top 40 has just become a haven of smut with nearly every song touting sex with a different beat and rythym. Personally, I've given up on the FM band because the music doesn't interest me any more. AM is much more interesting radio these days. I think there is to come a counter-revolution in both society and music where bands begin to make music that is beautiful, both musically and lyrically. I know there was a time when songs told stories of heroism and chivalry, of integrity and dignity all set to a nice rhythm. Many of you are right that stations are simply reacting to what they perceive the listeners want. So it's up to us, the listeners to demand more of music, reject the smut and believe me the stations will respond with high quality programming. Most of the suggestions on this board seem to be simply a regurgitation of the same kind of stations that we've been putting up with for decades. How about some completely fresh ideas? Is anyone else thinking outside the box?
