Dallas Reese (Middays Kicks Augusta) to "The Dude" in June

According to the RadioInfo.com newsletter, Kicks 99 Augusta Middayer Dallas Reese will be coming to WNQ in June. Most likely middays.

Dallas, meet the WCOS/Jonathan Rush whisperchipper.

There are two formats that Clear Channel does really really well and competing against them is tough and particularly tough with a CC heritage station in the format. CHR and Country.

Why? Whatever we can say about their all-voicetracked all the time practices, CC runs a tight, heavily researched list and throws its nationwide access to artists and promotions into it.

If you are a newcomer, you only take down a heritage station when they make mistakes. In both these formats, CC simply does not make mistakes. They are tight and stay tight.

I don't hear any of that on WWNQ. If they want to do the "we're local" thing, they are going to have to have an out of towner get up to speed really quickly, because J. R. epitomizes local.

I speculate Reese will be doing mornings, I mistyped in my original post.

The music selection isn't that bad. A lot of people I know like the older music mixed in with today's hits.

However, listening this morning to their "Country Cares for St. Jude" radiothon, Marty Hall is HORRIBLY boring and is NOT a radio DJ. That voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard. While listening to him, he seemed to have no clue what he was going to say next and just really appeared to be very excited about sick kids and how they were going to play sad songs and tell sad stories. Didn't sound like someone who was working the listeners emotions to get them to donate. I had to switch it off, just sounds ignorant.

taking on a radio thon after only being on the air a few months is just nuts. Where's the cume? The whole Clear Channel is corp radio and our jocks are local mean nothing today. 5 years ago maybe, they have done a good job when it comes to tracking their talents that no one knows or cares if they are in St Louis or Nashville or Miami. Is that good for the business is a whole different topic so please don't go there. If you wanna take on a heritage station today do it with New Country. Show me a station that has signed on the past 3 years playing a mix of older and newer that is winning.

Okay. I have to ask what he has done to tick people off? And while I'm asking, how long do you give him before he is gone or they have to sell?

I think the most frequently heard description of his demeanor is "arrogant."

A lot of community groups have said they've been told (to paraphrase) "why should I do anything for you if there's no money in it." In addition, they pretty much bad mouth everybody else in town. Including public radio. Who does that particularly when they are newcomers to town? They do.

They are in it for the long haul. It may be a very painful long haul for them, though. Their belief is that Columbia is a untapped market for radio with unlimited potential. In my experience, I think that is probably seeing things through rose colored glasses.

Their growth will be completely at the mercy of Clear Channel and Cumulus who have much more resources and can shift their stations from side to side to block any audience growth.

Here's a concrete example of what is wrong with the guy: he told the WXRY traffic service (which we have had a relationship with for 5 years) that he was "disheartened" that they were working with WXRY and that they ought to drop WXRY.

Straight from the horses mouth.

Not a great way to make friends when you are a newcomer to town.

Who takes that approach with a public station? How about someone that uses the wrong license plate as part of their station logo.

Thats a shame. Not really what this market needs.

Although, "why should I do anything for you if there's no money in it" is a question asked by far too many for way too long

That's not good. When I asked if they were making progress in the market, I heard some bad stories but wanted to hear from others before I confirmed things. Radio (much like life) is about relationships and thats a big thing in this market.
