Dallas Tower Paint Job Also "Splatters" Paint Onto Cars

WSOC-TV News' "Whistleblower" segment tonight reported several complaints of specks of paint on autos in Gaston County near a newly-painted tower. This is one of the Dallas towers and is owned by Clear Channel. My immediate thought was this -- I thought all of the Dallas towers wouldn't require painting because aren't they all strobed both day and night? If they have strobes by day, I thought that eliminated the need for painting.

The painting is not "just" for FAA Regulations and visibility, it is also to prevent or at least retard corrosion / rust. Check some of the smaller towers that have not been painted in over 10 years and you will find loads of rust where the paint has started cracking and peeling.

Still it really is bad for those who got hit with paint.

Very few towers have to be painted to avoid rust. Even Rohn 25 is galvanized. Hollow tube towers like Rohn 25 normally rust from the inside, no way to paint the insides of the tubes...

In some cases in makes more sense to put high intensity strobes on a tower instead of painting. That is why WBT has strobes now. It cost way more to paint the towers than to install the strobes. The members of the towers are so well galvanized paint won't stick.
