Danbury Radio in the News and frequency' on the Move

I t want to mention that Friday afternoon 1/7/11 was one of the most interesting radio shows that I have ever done in my life.
On Friday, I was live on 91.7 WXCI.org Danbury and I-84 became closed due to the sudden impact of a foot of snow that came in fast in about 3 hours between 2 and 5pm in the area which originally was only supposed to be 2-5 inches. listenerscalling in, reported getting trapped for hours almost in the same area running out of gas, some ditching their cars between exits, There were multiple tractor trail jackknife's happening in different areas between waterbury and Danbury leaving many stranded between exits after about 2pm and it was all downhill from there. It seems from e-mails pouring in with thank you' to the radio station that no one on the area of Danbury was reporting any traffic or weather updates with the situation, so I decided it was in my best interest to stay on the air until 10:30 pm where my show usually ends at 6. I was glad to relay traffic and weather updates and have getting many thank you letters being sent to WXCI. My GM has been forwarding some of them to me and my Facebook.com/theozno Pg. This will be a night/radio show I will remember for the rest of my life.

107.3 Dennis Jackson;s frequency Being sold to Berkshire Broadcasting. any guesses which AM? I know when we were testing the signal relaying WXCI I decided to drive around and it was a very strong signal going down to Wilton and Westport almost about as far as WXCI's signal. I guess I should say goodbye to WAAF in a few spots as well as getting it anytime there was a DX. I will miss it.

106.9 new translator in the hudson valley has me very worried. In Danbury on Rt 22 I-682 and Route 7, 53 and 58 WKDN from Philadelphia PA already shows a presence everyday :( I guess due to the weak DBU in the area. where exactly is that going to be located. I have the same problem trying to get kiss 95.7 in Danbury it interferes with True Oldies 95.7 from the Hudson Valley around the area of the airport

105.9 - will that be transmitting from Salisbury CT? isn't that a little too close to 105.9 WHCN?

Does the Corporation break for any local emergency ?

The local WICC 600 was good for news/info/weather. In a storm 'that's where you would tune'...


These days nothing. Maybe something in 'morning drive time' but that's it. (I mostly stopped checking the station out)

I heard about that Danbury mess but I think via TV.

I think WLAD 800 had some local programming at least Saturday morning when I tuned in.--then the satellite talk shows ?


Here I live in such a 'valley' I can not get too excited about FM reception. (long distance)


This area..Fairfield..is always so devoid of any news/info.. New York City market ? Even most the New York AM'ers have antennas in New Jersey with signals aimed at NYC. Except WFAN/WCBS. The TV stations seem to omit 'Fairfield County'.


Without Cable or ATT Uverse(?) I don't even get any TV Stations here.(with any clarity)


So I do commend you for your effort there on the local FM'er.



Another thing I mention to perhaps 'broadcasters'. AM is dead ? If you buy any radio from a 'Big Box Store' the receiver is so bad you get nothing. FM your strongest signals..a couple ?


I even tried the Boom-Boxes from stores. Even the Sony $50 thing could not get WREF 850 very good.(weak)


About the only thing out there are brands of Sangean and Grundig which seem to make an effort at something. The Sony ICF-38 portable has 'some' sensitivity. Expect the population to pay extra for radios ? Try it..go to CVS..Walgreens...Wal-Mart/Target, etc.

Auto Radios used to be good. Maybe they still are.

No. It's not gonna be transmitting from Salisbury. The only connection to Salisbury is that it's relaying WKZE 98.1, which is licensed to Salisbury. WKZE's tower is in New York as are the studios now. The new 105.9 translator is staying in Red Hook, New York. The only 105.9 that will be affected is WQXR, the Newark licensed Classic Station serving New York City.
 
Not to derail the thread, but first let me throw congrats to Jamie for staying on live and keeping people informed. Needless to say there were too few stations doing that and I am certain those who had their ear to the station were quite appreciative.

To touch upon what shepaug mentioned, I was half way through what would end up being a four hour, 25 mile drive when WICC finally interrupted the Clark Howard show. Too bad they felt the syndicated show was worth more than keeping motorists informed about things. I got so disgusted I went to the mp3 player as I would as much traffic info from it as I would get from local radio!

Let's all watch Tuesday night / Wednesday morning as these stations all screw the pooch and blow it with traffic coverage. I would be except for the morning programming the syndie talk programming will go up as per usual.

Again, congrats to Jamie for being a voice the listeners could count on.

I wish I could edit some of my grammar. I have gotten better over the years but R-I has the 10 minute rule...
From what I was getting from callers, I even had a Megabus driver call me turning to me for any info he could get. He was saying the cell phone networks were overloaded knocking out Data coverage on phones and connecting calls became a problem.
from what I understand, the capacity of a cell phone tower is about 8,000 connections. In Danbury there are more cellphone towers for the Population coverage but towards Southbury there is less towers and I think its just the 1 big one as you go over the hill
 
It's always great to be live on the radio during a snowstorm. You have a captive audience and can be a hero to everyone who's stuck.

I'm sure you're not going to miss being able to hear WKDN when that translator goes up.
 
This all reminds me of when I was driving through Danbury back in October on a Friday night - the night there was that state police shooting at exit 7 on I-84. I was stuck on I-84 east in Danbury for over 3 hours until I was finally able to make it to the route 7 exit. WCBS 880 had the traffic covered well during the situation, but CT's own WTIC AM had UCONN football that night so there was no traffic update from them.
 
I saw on All Access that (WDBY, Danbury) Kicks 105.5 is looking for a new afternoon guy/APD. Anyone know what's going on with Matt Carey?

yeah My bad on that Friday. I left at 6pm I had to Go to Moheagan sun. I was wondering why there was no traffic at exit 6 that night. It Just happened after I left. I did do moble remotes for the 6pm hour on my way down RT 34 after my board op was getting phone calls about the shutdown
